A couple of months ago i had full service and a cambelt change on my 2003 polo sport but for the last week i have had a problem.
What happens is when I come to a junction or im in traffic where you start and stop, i press the clutch in and the idle drops really lower and then bounces back to normal but sometimes it stalls and I dont know what the problem is.
It happened again today on the way home from work, came to the end of the road press the clutch in and the idle goes really low and then stalled.
I do have a k & n air filter on the car would that be the problem?
Common problem on some of the older engined polos (6n and 6n2) was that the throttle bodies gets dirty and gunked up. If you pull the air pipe off the throttle body bady and have a look inside at where the butterfly valve is then you'll probally find that its all dirty. If this is the case, get some carb cleaner and paper towel and clean it all off (with the engine turned off). The stick it back together, you'll probally find it'll idle a bit high at first but it should settle ok after a little while.
I had the same problem on mine, turned out to be the egr valve, It only happed to mine now and again. Also used to get the esp light on the dash at the same time.

How much was the egr vavle to replace?
Im interested as i have a friend who has a similar issue and no one can seem to sort it - nothing shows up on the computer they plug in either as its intermittant.
well a polo of this type doesn't have an egr valve but has something similar so the garage told me. If it was a failing egr valve it would turn up on the vag com as a fault code.
Anyway... Took my car to garage today as it was doing it again (the same fault as describe in the initial cost) and this time it really annoyed me.
I told them about possible egr vavle and also maybe throttle body been dirty, cutting a long story short, my throttle body was caked in crap and was blocking the two little slits that allow air to be sucked through the butterfly valve when idle (which means the valve sits closed). As these were blocked the car couldn't idle as no air could be sucked through and it also explained why it ran fine when i revved it a little as it was allowing air through.
I hope this helps any one else who has the same issue as me. All it cost me was 15 mins labour time at the garage and at £15 im chuffed as it is a dangerous, frustrating fault
