Last week of the Tinsley cooling towers.

Post by waveydavey »

Well the famous cooling towers next to the M1 @ jcn 34 only have another 5 days before they are reduced to a pile of rubble. I had a wander down on Sunday evening to get a few last pics, (Along with a few others who'd had the same idea!!!).

It'll not be the same without 'em..... You always knew you were 'home' when you got to the cooling towers. :(

Will be the end of an era!!!

Having a get together with family on Saturday for a BBQ with a few of us planning on watching the towers get destroyed after!!

I've heard 2 different times for when they'll be coming down! 1am and 3am!!!

All i know is the via-duct is shut from 10pm sat - 10am Sunday!!

Gonna go take some pics friday morning before work!

It's looking like there might be a Briskoda meet for this too.... Unfortunately i'm working 12 hour nights on Saturday so will have to do with a last look as i drive past them on Saturday evening..... Then watch what happened on the TV on Sunday.

Well as you may have seen on the news it didn't go exactly to plan..... Part of the north tower didn't come down untill a couple of hours after the detonation. We were at work and actually watched the final collapse live on one of the traffic cameras on the viaduct!!!!!

We were approx 20 miles away in Doncaster and had the windows in the office open and heard the two bangs and then the long drawn out rumble.... Weird thing was we realised after that the towers had obviously been gone a few seconds before the sound actually got to us. :)

I called off on the way home yesterday morning at around 7am but couldn't get very close..... It did mean i got the whole of the M1 to myself for about 3 to 4 miles !!!! I was just at jcn 34 when the guys were opening it back up and at that time on a Sunday morning when it was still being put out on the radio that all the roads were still shut i got the motorway to myself.... Very weird experience.... Managed to hit the speed limiter and put the car into limp mode though

Anyhow after my nights i can't sleep now so thought i'd post up some pics i took yesterday evening. The bottom deck of the viaduct was at a virtual standstill due to the amount of people there!!!

Apparently because of the shape of a cooling tower when they are demolished they just fold in on themselves and all the rubble goes down into the base of the tower. The opposite of a normal chimney stack where when demolished it will fall to one side and spread the debris.
