Gearbox Recondition recommendations

Post by peekay »

Hello, My 2000(W) GTI is sick and needs a doctor.

I First realised the whining of the cadburys milk tray at around 71, the car is now at 73k and the whining has pretty much gone. All i hear now is a slow deeper rotating noice, a lot more evident at lower revs in higher gears, wondered if anyone could pin-point what this sound is?

Either way i understand the box needs a Recon and that my wallet is going to get somewhat slimmer.

Can anyone give me recommendations as to where i can get the gearbox recon'd, new clutch and release bearing, all fitted etc.

Ideally i dont want to travel that far, so anywhere near Huddersfield or Peterborough will do.

Price - reviews - website - contact addresses - etc would be appreciated.

Thanks Peekay

Do a search on Yellow pages and go chat with a few companies...see which one gives you a reasonable price and sounds like they know what they are doing...

If the whining has gone and been replaced with a rumbling sound...

Thats not good!

It means that either the diff halves are splitting appart and chattering, or more lilkley your bearings are so FUBARd that they are grinding them selves away...

Get it looked at ASAP..

cleckheaton gearboxes

i paid £480 for a recon box, and you get 2 years warranty. Been smooth as silk for about 2 months now, they had it done within a few hours aswell.

Source your own clutch kit too, it'll be cheaper and you know whats going in also.
