Need Help Buying A Polo MK4?!?!

Post by polo-sam »

Im looking to buy my first car soon, and wondering what really to look for when im buying, any models to avoid i.e GL, CL, L .. etc any bad years to look for and what engine size. Also what should i be getting for between 500-700 quid. Any advice please email me on cosmicnutter_1993@hotmail.co.uk thanks Sam

Just got my first car, Polo MkIV qutie nice condition, few lil bumps but barley visible and pretty standard interior and it can all be cleaned and updated/ dubbed slowly as the pennies come in lol.

Keep an eye out on autotrader is my advice and remember the price on there is just what they are offering, get your dad to take you over to check out the car, check everything and give it a test drive if possible.
I got my £1595 down to £1350 which was pretty easy tbh :( could have got less i think, and if they say like 50 more (like on mine) try and get some extra bits, like mats, or a full clean or fix something like a small dent(easier if your getting it from a mechanic or dealer)
Never be afraid to ask, no harm. and you can always go back if they disagree but dont back down to easy, gotta give em a bit of a push lol(as i didnt :x ) lol

Or you could try calling around a lot of the local dealers that might not advertise in many places, a mate did this from the yellow pages jsut asking them what they got and got quite a good deal apprently.

might have a few more miles on it for tht price tbh

Good advice, all depends if you want a 16v or an 8v, lower engine, big engine and what milege you want high or low. I have a 6N (mark4) 1997 in storm gray. its a 1.0L 8v. i brought it with a running problem which i have just solved. i got her for £1000, 1 previous owner and only 23000 on the clock when i got her. she is my first car. I have no power steering or electric windows (not really botherd) And i've made her even better, slammed on her ass, new shoes Ats Cups, de bump stripped, mark 5 rear lights, head unit and clear front indecaters and side repeaters oh and pressed plates. and alpine 6x9's.

good luck hunting. :D

Mines 1998 (The newer 98 version i think it changed in october) and has done about 68 thousand miles; as i said i could have got it a few 100 cheaper but my Dad blurted out 1300 and i think the bloke new that was a good deal and he tried it on and said 1350 and my Dad accepted lol
(Wasnt overally bothered as i had £3000 from my grandad for a car and stuff so i elt my dad geton with it lol, thought he'd have more experience and power to haggle etc...)

Find bad points on the car - mine has a couple of rust patches (luckly fixable) and the passenger side door lock was broken (a common mod what i've done is to delock it anyway), bodywork needed a little bit of TLC. 50k on the clock, 1.4CL. It needed a cambelt change which is why it was cheap but its still a bargain! Bought BBS Rxii's and done all the usual modifications (check out the DIY section of this forum for tips).

In october 2007 (this is the on the mot document) it has 23499 miles on. i got her at the end of april 2008 with 23600 miles on. lol.

The mark 5 light conversion is very sinple. just a matter of trimming the end of the light, swaping wires 1 and 2 on the n/s light and wires 4 and 5 on the o/s light and drilling the middle hole out a bit bigger for securing the lamps. Very easy. Theres a guide on how to do it on the DIY section.

Faulty MAP sensor.

Nothing as of yet, i only found the fault today.

I may know someone selling some mark 5 lights.
oh and on the o/s lamp, cut the lined notches out the plug so you can turn it 180 degrees. :D

had a quick look on ebay, found a MAP sensor for £29.99

Have you checked in the common fault section? Should give you quite a good heads up.
