bloody hell!!!
i really didnt believe this pic so i asked my dad, who has just retired from the fire service after 30 years, if he has ever seen anything like this and he says that he has seen cars in alot worse states than that. he also said high speed tree crashes are some of the messiest RTA's going. although he did mention a particularly mssy one where a man crashed into the back of a scafold truck and a loose scafold bar went straight through the middle of his head! not nice eh

Going by some of the posts on the actual forum where these pics were, as well as reading the text that went with (showing it to be Portugal) and of course actually looking at the things.
1. It's in a euro country, LHD, and the speedo only has one ring of figures. They are therefore in kilometres per hour, putting the indicated speed at around 100kph or about 60mph. You may say hitting a tree at 60 is unlikely to cause this carnage, but are you willing to try it? (60mph launch, no brakes). Even on an unpopulated vehicle.. (£££!!). It's at about 2000rpm too, looks like a TDi tach.. do any VWs even TDis have a 30mph/1000 top gear?
Also see how far the two parts have gone after the initial impact. Doesn't look to be any further than a distance you would expect a car chunk to go at 60 - in fact a lot less than *I* would.
2. It's open for debate as to whether they had chance to brake here.. a sudden twitch or other problem/mistake, and suddenly you've hit that tree a couple yards off the road before your brain even registers the nerve impulses. Perhaps they were trying to avoid a baby deer or something - in which case it was hard onto the pulsating pedal and maybe clutch, steer, whoops, its all gone pear shaped... pedals being pushed would mess up the reading.
3. In that kind of situation, even ABS probably won't help you... it'll just stop the wheels from locking completely straight away and therefore not instantly zeroing the reading. Might even have been drifting sideways a little on impact which would throw it off futher. First hit looks to be sideways into one tree, halving the car, then forwards into another..
(so it could have been 60.... or indeed, 100+... but it's -at least- 60)
4. Look at how the engine has been thrown completely clear of the scene, the suspension is wrecked, the roof is gone... but if you were feeling morbid you could probably go sit in the seats and not be in much discomfort. Well... your ankles wouldnt have a good place to twist into, and it may be an idea to keep hands off the bent bit of the wheel ((is that from head impact?!)), but the truck and head probably in little danger. The passenger compartment body shell on that car must be extremely hardcore!! ... tree-bisectable B pillar aside, think I'd feel pretty damn safe in one of them at 50mph.
5. Impact speed probably was too high for airbags to even be of any use, possibly even extra harmful (throwing head backwards AFTER initial contact with wheel/dash) hence the electronics probably would have left them unfired - unless that white mass on the seat is a fired one and not a sheet-covered body bit, and the launch sites are not as obvious here as might be thought.
Verdict: Ouch. Likely very, very fatal unless this is Ripleys. And audis look *strong* on this evidence... even if not enough to save the life of the poor unfortunate who drove into a tree at 60mph, but at least keeping enough bits for a full size coffin burial (face it, your polo would be mince and so would you in this case - they'd be tweezering eyeball out of the seat fabric for forensic ID tests for weeks).
PS Scorpio - looks like the impact has wholly (or almost) "ringed" the tree, which will kill it stone dead within two months or so because of loss of vascular matieral to carry water and nutrients (some is external, some is internal, both are essential). Classic biology GCSE example of how different parts of a plant conduct materials - diagram of a ringed tree and an experiment on a woody plant to match.
