Hi
I'm currently toying with the idea of turning our little shopping trolley into a sleeper. Have had a look through the archives and it would appear that only 1 person on here (Lee) has done this - is that correct?
If so, does anyone know of a good place to find out more about the options available (eg. what engine choices / where to buy / what companies offer the service / how much / how long etc.etc.etc.
Am looking forward to turning our gti into a complete sleeper. Hopefully ready for next summer.

best place to do it is the phrim really helpfull make u feel at home and welcome anytime. tim, paul ,jelly and laura good bunch of people well into the v -dubs as well ! Tim is the mastermind behind it all , ask him anything bout vw s he will tel u down to the last bolt, He is doin my car as we speak !

Funny you should mention the phirm as they are the one company I've spoken to (today). I've arranged to go and see them on Saturday week, but thought I'd put some questions up here at the same time.
If your car is there on Sat week I'll no doubt see it

there is only nick's mk5 and my mk5....lee's is a mk4
the phirm did do a mk5 but im not sure what happened to it, it all depends on how much you want to pay to get it done.
i have gone through a friends specialist VAG performance garage and ive got a very very good deal due to sourcing the right parts.
would never want to put anyone off but.....its not an easy swap and not something to be done in 2 weeks!
any more info then just ask, as ive played a large part in my conversion

What is perceived to be the best choice for conversion in terms of ease of install?
What is required to be purchased for the conversion?
Any recommended places to get the conversion components from?
How much do the component parts cost (roughly)?
FWIW The Phirm quoted me around £6k (ish) for total cost - that includes the engine/box etc. but I would have to provide it. Time taken would be 6-8wks.

engines available - best to use either the BAM 1.8t engine from the TT or S3 or the 1.8t engine from the Ibiza cupra or the Golf GTI
(i used an ibiza cupra and bought the whole crashed/damage car which made life easier)
you are going to need custom mounts, downpipe and maybe driveshafts.....
as for where to get these bits i can only recomend the places we have used and i expect TSR who did nicks conversion made their own components. the wiring is a nightmare too due to the different looms and ECU's and you will obviously need to think about what re-map to go for
thats about the going rate for a conversion...thank god i didnt pay that much! also that is about the length of time too
dont forget you will be needing coilovers, brakes....

the phrims mk5 is there u will see it when u go there its my best mates car and it is havinng 4 wheel drive conversion the best engines r the 225 or 210 engine codes ayp or aum they r all pretty much the same but the 225 has forge pistons but tim will explain that to u just depends on what money u have. but i really reconmend havin this done as it will put a smile on ur face everytime u drive it trust me there not for the faint hearted !!

Im pretty sure theyre using an s3 rear end IIRC.

I am seriously looking into selling my Gti and buying an older Gti to get a BAM engine conversion completed.
Only thing real thing that will be challenging is the wiring, do you have hints or tips? are you able to wire in the exsisting clocks or do you need doner clocks?
i dont know anything about TSR, they did nicks conversion. the wiring is probably the most difficult part, we have gone down the route of using the whole ibiza loom but i think nick's was done differently at TSR. I have managed to keep my original GTI clocks too after sending away the ibiza ECU to REVO for "immobilise and defeat"
