My V reg Polo Classic 1.9 TDI keeps cutting out

Post by thesinger »

Hi All,

I am new here and I'm not sure whether my V reg Polo is a MKV or MKVI. I have been posting this all over this site - sorry to the regulars!

My Polo Classic 1.9 TDI keeps cutting out. It can happen without warning and whether or not the engine is warm or cold. When I attempt to restart I don't get a heater light on the dash. To restart I have to take the key out of the ignition and wait for about 15 minutes. I usually then get the heater light and the car will start. Not very reliable though and can cut out at any time afterwards. I have noticed that when I take out the key from the ignition that if I hear a "click" the car has a better chance of restarting. No click and she won't restart. It has been suggested to me that it could be a security fault i.e. key recognition? Please help.

Cheers

Gary

It's a mk5

Have you checked the battery terminal? That would be my first port of call.

Hi David

Just got in from under the bonnet having disconnected the battery leads gave them a clean then replaced them. Did notice that the live terminal was loose when I removed it. Now all tightened up. Turned car over several times without a problem - started everytime. Took the car around the block all seems OK - fingers crossed. Thanks very much for the advice. I will make sure I take any other problems (hopefully not to often) to the Mk V section, thanks again.
