Gauging interest in carbon fibre parts...

Post by daa709 »

Hey guys,

I have a very good friend who's into his forums (he has a 306 ralleye), and he's just started up a business making custom carbon fibre parts. Anything from just a carbon fibre VW keyring to a full carbon fibre bonnet.

I'll obviously rep for him here, but he needs to see if anyone is genuinely interested on uk-polos!

Anyone..? 8)

Sounds pretty cool ,
how much/and how does he charge?
By the amount of carbon fibre used or job prices?

Its by amount of carbon fibre used.

I was expecting it to be masses, but he's said wing mirror covers would be £20-30 max. That gave me a rough idea of what other things would be like. £60-70 for a spoiler. etc.

His whole sales point is that it will be cheaper than VW to get the original part in your car colour :P

Would he paint the parts himself? I'd be interested in front and back bumper if he could make them the same as 16v bumpers for my 8v.

He doesn't do any painting. He's purely for the carbon fibre weight, weave and 'look'. But you'll be able to primer/pain them for sure. Will talk to him about the bumpers, and i'll get a PM out.

Do you have any examples of what he has already made?
Just so we can have a look?

I'm sure if he produces parts they'll sell, I'd be more interested in the performance side of things than the look of it. Bonnets, body panels even?

Hey, just spoke to the guy properly, here's the deal:

He can do one-off's (so your car is more unique), but group buys are much cheaper. His work is massively labour intensive as he uses the F1-style Prepreg method to forge the fibre, so once they make a mould it's easier to roll out loads.

In terms of performance, having a carbon bonnet, for example, will weigh 4-5kg's instead of 25-30kg's. You start from the bonnet and work your way around the car, and you can chop off a few 100kg's !

In terms of cosmetics, the weave is perfect (see the pics), and unpainted does look good, and the guy can make little things like wing mirror covers.

Prices are around £800 for bonnets, £150 for spoilers/skirting, £80 for wing mirror covers, etc (these are just guideline prices). Obviously these are low quantity prices, which is why the guy is interested in group buys, the more the cheaper!!

Here's a few pictures 8)

As said in the other post. Could you get a price up for the mark5 GTi front splitter and plastic tray that sits underneath the wipers (glues to the windscreen?) Cheers.

That isn't glued, is stuck under the plasticcover, which is quit tight.

But I too am wondering how much that cover would cost in carbon? (actually they're 2 parts) and would that mate of yours who makes it all be willing to ship to Holland?
