Just bought a GTI

Post by ben3486 »

Just bought a GTi and Im very happy with it. Black with 51000 miles. One of the things Im not sure about though is there seems to be a lot of movement in the gearstick. I thought for a GTi it would have quite short tight shifts, but when its in gear it moves left and right more than I thought it should do. Also when in 4th if u take your foot off accelerator and then back on the gear stick moves backwards and forwards. think it only does it in 4th. Any feedback would be great. cheers guys.

Welcome to the Elite mate 8). what your describing there is completely normal mate. you could always get a B&M short shifter to make shifts smaller and decrease movment in the stick?

Not sure if they sell them anymore, but I got mine from kam racing.

yeah the B&M short shifter really improves the feel of the gear stick and changes, also noticed when I changed it that the original one used to scrape on the side when in reverse, no such problem with the short shifter.

Congrats mate, very nice cars! It's probably nothing to be concerned about but just incase it is...it could be the gear linkages abit out, or the "jigs" or whatever you call it! I had a similar sounding experience when i owned a GTi.

Enjoy it mate!

with the short shifter reducing throws for the gear changing this reduces stress on them old trusty chocolate boxes of yours ;)

Actually I think it's possibly the opposite, with the short shifter I find you need to be more direct with it, and use a tad more force. Causing you to put more strain on teh 'box. That's just how it feels though.

I love my short shifter. My Dad doesn't though, he always stalls it and puts it in the wrong gear. You need practise lol. Mine also jerks in 4th when tapping the throttle, it's quite funny

Its great the amount of innuendo you can come up with about the 'knob twitching' in 4th

I know exactly what you are talking about, my girlfriends GTi does the same.

I keep thinking that is the gearbox mount bush, as (with her driving) it's really jerky with changes.

Does anyone know if there is a poly version for the gearbox mount??
