Why am I not getting any interest

Post by smokey666 »

Hi Guys,

I put my car up for sale about 12 days ago on autotrader and pistonheads but as of yet I have only had 1 phone call.

Its a 2003 Volkswagen Polo Sport, Metallic Black, its done 67,500miles but has just had cambelt change and a service from GDI (Grey Devil Industries), full service history and in excellent condition

Its up for £5000 which i believe is a very good price as I have compared mine to alot of other cars and for the condition of mine i think its good.

Is it to expensive? or are people just not buying cars at the moment

Any views would be great :)

It's slightly high mileage (for its age) and that doesn't seem like a great price. We just paid 2250 for a 2002 1.2S that had only done 62k (full year's MOT, FSH, recent timing change), and although it's not such a good car on paper, as used car buyers we were specifically looking for something economical, so to us it's a "better" car than your Sport*.

Have you looked it up in Parkers? The private sale price for ours (in this month's book) was 2715.

* - having said all that the new car has been a disaster for us with numerous expensive problems, but that's another story - they'd still have been there if we'd paid more for the car.

It's too expensive. The price is competitive compared to traders but people are wary of buying private nowadays.

Also the equivalent Polos on Autotrader have less miles, which means a lot in the UK market.

Unfortunately people who think 45k is better than 65k are often wrong - 45k requires a cambelt soon, and your 65k might be a lot better miles. Such is life.

Im not prepared to take anything less than £4800 for it otherwise I will just keep it for another 6 months. And as for economy I average 40mpg which is very good.

Keep it for another six months :)

The used car market is a tough place at the best of times, and especially tough now. New cars are getting cheaper, fuel prices are higher, road tax increases are kicking in - a lot of the people in the market for a used Polo are going to be paying much more attention to running costs, and as it happens your 1.4 isn't that good on MPG or emissions compared to the rest of the range - see here: http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Sum ... 012&page=3

It's worth the most to someone like you who wants a poky, fun, good looking sporty car - but unfortunately someone like you isn't necessarily in the market for a five year old car!

I got my 2003 sport last year and paid £5100 with 61k on the clock and it came with 12 month warranty, so think its a little expensive. I know a guy who works in a used car garage and he has been saying people juat aint buying car at the moment

Yeh I believe its because people are just no buying at the moment, if it doesnt sell I just keep it for another 6months and try again at maybe £5000 - £4500

Mate according to my friend who works is a used car dealer said you will wont get more than £4000 i.e if its in a good condition......

And if you do a part exchange then the max u would get be £3500.......

After all its a 6 year old car and i am no expert i would be hesitant to buy a high mileage petrol car than i would be with a desiel car.......

If you are in a hurry.....then i would put the car through aution and see how much it fetches.....

£4000 sounds more like it - and that's now, not in six months time... depreciation's a cruel beast.

my girlfriend bought a 55 plate 1.2 polo black 3dr with only 13k on the clock for £5000 from the main dealers last month so you have no chance of getting anywhere near that, looks like you will be keeping it.

It's the credit crunch (and the fuel crunch, and the road tax crunch) - 1.2 is the new 1.4

I know the road tax will be a killer for some people next year. I think alot more people will be driving 1.2's soon.

I think it's going that way (just as the Govt intended) - people are favouring the thriftier, cleaner petrol engines, or the diesels if they can afford them. Of course there'll always be plenty interested in a poky 1.4 like yours, but you'll probably find the wider market going a little cooler on it, that's all.
