70mpg is possible but think around 50mpg if you drive normally....
yeah i did forget to mention that i was driving rather grandad like, although it was mainly motorway work so i was averaging 70-75mph. the 6th gear is very useful, 70mph in 6th ticks the engine over at something like 1700-2000 rpm!
Polo GTI or Polo GT 130

To be totally honest i had a Golf GT TDi 130 and its pulling power was excellent! It is a rather heavy engine though, and the handling of the golf was shocking! (a big of a shock for myself as i came from a chain of 106's, which is are a superb car for handling!)
If your considering a Polo GT 130 why not look around ar Ibiza FR 130's or even Skoda Fabia VRS! All the same engine, with the Polo being the most expensive of the three in general, along with it being the hardest to get a hold of!
All easily re-mapped to about 170BHP with impressive torque figure to match, which is exactly what you want! and they are all capable of fetching excellent MPG, around 50-65!
I would recommend the Fabia VRS! Best in regards of cost...they have a mean look and CAN be made to look pretty good with a nice set of wheels and some coils! I was seriously looking at buying one a few weeks ago, alot of potential for you money i think.
Heres a few piccies of some tasty ones: -
