Good Tyre for Spare

I have managed to source a 5th wheel to match my set, so I am looking for a good 195/45/16 tyre for a spare, I am putting Uniroyal Rainsport 2's on the 4 wheels, but as the are directional I cant use them for the spare (on one side they will be fine, but if I get a puncture on the other side, it will be rotating the wrong way).

So, anyone have an idea of a good tyre to use as a spare??

and where u going to keep this spare tire? as there aint enough room in the car as they use space savers

Hi,

The 9N has a full size (15") steel spare in the wheel well, which would fit a 16" with a 195/45/16 tyre.

So can anyone recommend a decent spare tyre?

Surely any sub-premium brand that is not directional will be okay - remember it will always just be for short term use and will always be different in characteristics from the "real" tyres - you would just need to drive with that in mind! That really is the beauty of just using a full sized steel wheel - ie it will always end up being for short term use. I got a fifth alloy for my wife's Polo but it has not got directional tyres on it - even so I only intend to use that one as a short term use wheel as its has an old Dunlop SP on it and the others are now Michelin Pilots.

i must admit witht he spare it's an absolute b!tch to get in and out having a 16" witht the correct tire, but i had the same problem ish with a 15". or are my teckniques crap?

I will post pics ASAP. I thought I had saved the pics from when I bought it but they are nowhere to be seen! Far too crap weather to take pics at the minute, plus I need to have time to wash it first, no one wants to see a scruffy looking Polo!

I know I need a bi-directional, but does anyone have any names that I can go from? Most websites seem to omit whether they are directional or not, which is pretty annoying!!!

I have 195/55/15 spare ATM and there is loads of room around it.

I have a 16" alloy spare with a Pirelli PZero Nero 205/45/16 it fit but catches where the warning triangle is. It helps if you take out the boot floor that you lift up then put then put the wheel in tucking it under the warning triangle first

with a bootful of crap and amp/sub etc i might just remove it as i wont be arsed to change it lol. my locking nut and stuff i need all time are just in the boot somewhere ha ha.

and i have have never though about this subject before. i dunno wether mine is safe to use in both directions. but i suppose you can run a tire backwards as long as it's only home as there wont be as much grip.

I find that most online tyre stores include access to a picture of the tyres - so you can see if a tyre is bi-directional - most are for obvious reasons. Just chose a tyre from a main stream manufacturer Firestone - Goodyear - Hanook etc none of them are proper premium brands except maybe Goodyear - making a choice is up to personal "gut feelings" - the main thing is to keep it legal, ie same speed and load rating as the other tyres - there will be no one correct tyre for use only as a spare - remember you might need to run with this tyre on for a week if ordering and fitting a new tyre is required.

As for having difficulty getting the spare in and out of the car - yes its a bit a struggle even when there is space all round it - I mainly avoid this problem by having a fifth alloy for both cars so the full sized steel tends to stay in the garage just for when I am "rotating" wheels or cleaning wheels etc.
