Your light should come on after 38 litres have been used approx (i.e. a 7 litre reserve). I use this to work out my MPG:

Everytime you fill up, make note of the amount of fuel used to fill the tank, and factor in the mileage you did before filling up to get your MPG

Just an update for anyone interested, our mpg is still low and more to the point our emissions light is still on (again) so we took the car to a VW specialist today, who plugged it into their computer. we were expecting to see something very subtle and clever come up about a sensor or loose connection somewhere, bearing in mind we had the cat replaced a couple of weeks ago, but no - what came up was the exact same low performing catalytic converter error we saw on the computers at the previous two (non vw) garages.
This floored us a bit at first, but the guys at the garage explained that the new cat we'd had fitted wasn't genuine vw, and basically the ECU was having none of it, detecting slightly non-standard performance and flagging it up as a fault.
we took this up with the garage that fitted it, and they got on to the technical people at their parts supplier, who claimed that basically a vw dealer had to reprogramme the car to accept the new cat. The place we were at today said that was rubbish, and it does sound it really. Anyway, the long and short of it is we're getting a refund on the first replacement cat, and then getting the genuine article fitted at this specialist tomorrow, for the same price as the useless aftermarket one.
Fingers crossed.. if this does the trick, and it was all just the same problem all along, then maybe we'll get to like this car again.

Our polo actually had an ECU fault and an engine check light.
Both have actually gone off on their own, but the exhaust is blowing a 'lil bit anyway...
Still, the only thing i can say thats good about our polo 6n2 is the economy. And i like the way it is able to sit on the motorway quite comfortably and deal with everything else ok despite being a 998cc. But if those are the only things i can say that are good about it..welll
The windows seem to leak slightly, brakes are rubbish, no equipment at all and i think it feels cheaper than it should + rubbish gearbox
As a result of this i'm getting a golf mk2 gti. despite 150k miles still go like new. i think the problem with modern cars is the electronics they have on board. It causes to many niggles... sad but true i fear.

Another update - we had the cat replaced with a proper VW part as above, and since then (clutching on to the desk for luck) no light yet. Fuel economy's still not great though - at each refill we're comparing the mileage done compared to the petrol going into the car (ie missing from the tank) and by my reckoning it's doing about 40mpg. Not awful, but not what we expected from a modern 1.2L car claiming 47mpg in all the literature.

It's decent improvement on the 36 we were getting back at the start of this thread, when the catalytic converter needed changing. At least it proves that the £300+ that cost us made a difference to something!

Hi , can I put my tuppence worth in. I have a AZQ ( 1.2 3 cyl 12v )engined car , albeit with a different badge on it. I regularly fill up with about 320/330 on the trip and have never managed to squeeze in more than 39 litres. My running is 75% fast Aroads at low 60s mph and the rest mixed town use. This calculates at or around 42/42 mpg. Hope this helps. On a different but related note in related forums it states that the air filter elements have really long service lifes but can make a big difference when swapped out early for not a lot of £s
