U do know fitting a 2big throttle will kill your throttle responce as the manifold wont be able 2 cope with the difference in afs (air flow speed!)
But it depends from engine 2 engine so no1 who hasnt tried this will be able 2 tell u its just r&d that will tell if it works!

Dont forget to mention that the fueling will be all wrong and will proberaly cause the engine to run like a bag of nails until it has had a serious re-map...

You have to remeber that on the GTI with the throttle wide open, the variable valve timing kicks in to make allowances for the massive airflow occuring...

Got the GTI throttle body today. First impression, the hole is wayyyy bigger than the throttle body i got on at the moment.

Well fitted it, and it fits perfect. All the nuts match up and everythings. However the revs sit way to high, and then engine cuts off. I think bbspolo was right, the TPS sensors dont match as when i try to press the throttle nothing happens. Is there neway of getting around this?

:shock: you have big balls m8.... I would not want to be plugging stuff into my cars ECU unless I knew for sure it was going to work....

there are hundreds of things that might be preventing it from working.....

Theres not really many things that are preventing it from working. The engines on a GTI and 1.4 16v are almost exactly the same. The only difference are suttle. GTI has bigger throttle body, is a 1.6 etc. But the rest is almost exactly the same. So its quite obvious that the parts are interchangeable.

The only flaw is the parts from a GTI have been programmed to work with GTI's only. So that why i was wondering if it is possible to program it to a 1.4 16v. All i really need is someone who can adjust the TPS sensor to lower the idle revs and adjust it to make it work with my ecu.

yes tps sensors can be adjusted thats part of what mapping is!
however im not sure if you can adjust a standard ecu with out chipping it 2 allow extra funtions!
best options is 2 get in touch with motorsport develiments a guy called stu he is the dogs dangleys at mapping and chipping ecu's!

The TPS sensor...technically...is in the peddle...given that the car is fly by wire...

The issue is that the motor in the TB proberably does not talk in the same code as the old one....so the motor to move the throttle wont actually be getting the proper signal...

There is a repeater TPS on the TB as well that checks that the main TPS on the peddle is correct.... again..if this repeater TPS is talking a different language than the old one.....game over...

Yer i think this is partly correct!
The tps sensor just sends messages 2 the ecu telling it at what stage the throttle should be at!
however since your ecu still belives a smaller throttle is fitted when it sends a code and realises that the trottle is not behaving how it is telling it 2 then the ecu just goes into a safe mode 2 stop any damage 2 your engine!

Mapping the car will set the ecu so it is awear that you have a larger throttle and should stop the car going into a safe mode!

Talk 2 stu mate he rearly is the daddy at ecu's and mapping if he doesnt know it its not worth knowing!
In fact if you go on to any evo, cossy, scuby, skyline , jap forum they ALL use stu!

One bit of advice though if u plan on going any further with your car like cams' head work or upping the compression (skiming the head!) get all the bits 2gether then get it mapped as mapping isnt that cheep and u will need it done ever time you change the spec of your engine 2 get the best out of your mods!

Do you have VAGCOM....

This might be useful..

* The vehicle's battery has been disconnected and re-connected
* The ECU has been removed and reinstalled
* The Throttle Body has been cleaned or removed and reinstalled
* The Accelerator Pedal has been removed and reinstalled


In some vehicles, the car will not run correctly, or may not run at all without performing a TBA after one of the above operations. The TBA can be performed on both Drive-By-Wire (DBW or E-gas) as well as Cable-throttle cars as long as there is no Idle Stabilization Valve (ISV). If there is an ISV, then there is no motorized control of the throttle at all. Typically, '96-'99 VW/Audi have motorized Cable-throttle, and '00+ VW/Audi have DBW. Obviously, there are some exceptions. This should be obvious but TDI's do not have throttle bodies.
There are certain test conditions that must be met before doing a TBA:

* No DTC's in the Engine Controller
* Battery voltage at least 11.5 V
* Throttle must be at idling position (keep your foot off the gas pedal)
* Throttle body part must not be dirty (carbonized).
* Coolant temperature must be between 5 and 95C

But sadly not right in this chaps case! yes he should run basic settings when replacing any of those componants! but that wouldnt give the faults that he his it would at worst make the flyby wire abit jummpy and would leave the epc light on but wouldnt stop the car from reving up!

well done for finding that though very intresting read for ppl who want 2 know abit more!

Thanks for helping guys. Stu got back and he says he needs to see the car to make and judgements. But he did say that hes never tried to make another throttle body work on another car so doesnt know whether it can be done. He wants £45 just to diagnose it and see what the problem is! Do you think it is worth it? Also can vagcom do this?

short answer NO!
stu will read the settings on your ecu! whay more than what even a vw garage can do! so for £45 pound bargin!!!!
