Polo Gti camshafts

Hi everyone.I'm looking to put some aftermarket cams to my Gti.Upto now the only cams i've been able to find for this car are the Schricks, but after e-mailing the company they said the only specs they can offer are 256 intake with 9.15 lift and 244 exhaust with 9.00 lift

.They also said they would give me an approximate 5 to 10 % increase, but i'm not really sure aboute that.

Anyway.Does anyone know the OEM camshaft specs on the Polo Gti??As in duration, valve lift, timing etc???Also, does the Gti have adjustable cam gears, or do i need to buy those too??

Alright, I've got a Lupo GTi which I believe is the same engine as the POlo GTi, currently running just under 150Bhp, due to a BMC CDA, full decat Powerflow, performance intake manifold and a ported and polished head. I'm just about to put in some fast road cams! I am getting them from here....

They have more choice than Dr. Schrick but I wouldn't advise anything much more than a 260 degree opening or it will give you absolutely no power in the bottom end and make your idle rough as feck! You don't need to get adjustable pulleys but if you want the best from them they are advisable. You may have to even upgrade the v/v springs etc. if you go for longer opening cams! The one thing I will say is that AAT are not cheap as they bring all there stuff in from Germany! There top turbo kit for the VAG 1.6 16v is several grand+++ but will give you about 240Bhp I think! Hope this is of help!

Well i've e-mailed them about their cam specs and the didn't even bother to reply

At least Schrick answerd me back saying that these cams are the best for my car, since they offer the most power without compromising in low end power and giving troubles with the EPC.
I also thought about port and polishing the head but ppl told me there isnt much room for that since its made by Williams and that will probably make little difference of not at all.
Also ive thought about the manifold thingy but thats far too costly for the power gain.Its kinda strange to me you are at 150 HP with so few mods.I've had my ECU chipped, a free flow exhaust and a K&N filter with an intake to the front bumper but i doubt im close to 140!!Anyways, im planning to install these cams probably next week so ill let u know how it goes.I really dont care for a turbo since the engine itself is not made for one.Plus i dont think the chasis can take that much power, nor can the rims and tyres the car has on now.I'm already having a hard time keeping the wheels from spinning right now, let along with 240 HP!!!
Don't forget also the weight to HP ratio which also changes with a turbo installation.
My next mods are gonna be the cams and then the BMC with a new FRP at 3.5 Bar...I think that's as far as i will go with this engine..
P.S.By the way i've looke a bit into that cam spec thing and i found out the cams in this baby are REALLY MILD!!!It has a variable intake ranging from 205 to 246 degrees and exhaust of 215 degrees!!!So i think the above mentioned cams will probably do the job!!!!

Cool...let us know how they are! Where did you get the car chipped, as I haven't really looked into this as the Lupo GTi chip is encased in glue, I assumed the Polo GTi one would be as well!
I haven't heard of a Lupo GTi engine being rolling roaded at standard below 130Bhp, I'd assume the same with the Polo, I have seen cars loose a few Bhp with K&N's and other "open" filters compared to the standard filter! There have been people have over 140 with just the BMC and de-cat system, on the Loop so you should be able to get the same with the Polo!
The head porting/polishing has made a hell of a difference between 70 and 100, I was very sceptical before I had it done as I know gas flow in modern engines is all designed by computers and any venturii effect designed in the system can be nullified by having the head modified but it seems to have worked well! Do you have a contact email/telephone no. that I could speak to at Dr Schrick? AAT I think may also have an LSD for the Polo if u r having traction problems but expect to pay $$$$!
Don't think the turbo is a good idea either, not least for the cost!

Well there aren't many companies here that chip this engine either, especially the ones with e-gas ('01>).Fortunatelly my Polo (and maybe all Polo's??) dont have the glue thingy so i could have ot chipped.There is a company here named Overboost that did my car.They use the so called "Genesis" software.In the beginning i wasn't expecting much but in the end the chip made a difference bringing all the modes together.
And it only costed me 300 Euros!!!Can't tell u how much i gained from that though..
Other stuff that made a HUGE impact on the engines performance (and i HIGHLY recommend) are:
1)Making a CAI from the front of the car to the airbox (and removing the crap silencer)
2)Changing my gearbox (WOW!!!AMAZING CHANGE) to a new model code that i guess have different ratio's
3)Making a Hyperground kit!! (Also amazing due to the fact insulation SUCKS in the Polo!!!)
My next steps are gonna be the cams,maybe a FPR from a 1.8T engine (150HP), and also i'm thinking about the BMC CDA, but cant really justify the cost to gains ratio...

P.S.Conserning the HP of the AVY engine (which as far as i can tell upto now is superior to the ARC angine), there is a new Dyno in the BMC filters site, that has it mesured to 132,6 HP standard!!

Hyperground kit...not familiar with that term, do you mean heat shielding!?

Am lucky with the Lupo as it has a standard 6 speed gearbox which makes it easy to match revs between gears, don't know why it wasn't on the Polo GTi maybe it wasn't released till after they stopped the Polo GTi.

The best performance changes I have done is to the suspension and brakes so far though!

Recommend the BMC filter though!

There are lots of links and im sure you'll find out for yourself what u have to do.If not, drop a post..
I had a suspension switch also.I'm now using Bilstein Sprint with H&R springs.Big difference yeah, but i prefer to have more engine power.
Dunno about the BMC,its kinda expensive.Did it really make that much difference?
As for the Lupo gearbox, im sure it rocks!!!Dunno what it would do to the Polo though (i guess it would be standard if it were any better..no?).

Ok, never heard it called that, thought it was only done in old cars, my problem is battery is in the boot under the flooring!

Well from the Powergraph the BMC is giving an extra 6 peak Bhp! Not much I know but with other mods like de-cat exhaust, cams, better inlet manifold etcetc it'll all add up! Probably best result you'll get from any aftermarket airfilter!

So what kinda result does the hyperground kit give if done well?

I've been interested in doing the Hyperground mod for ages, ever since I saw it on a Japanese Polo GTi site.

What kind of effect does it have?

Also, do you have any pictures of your CAI, and where in the air box is the baffle?

All it did is give you a better spark on the plugs , you can make your own( cost about Â£25 to buy the parts of it) and connect it to different parts of the engine.That what i did to my old honda civic vti , it did feel it pulled better but it could have been in my head .

Well first of all im in Greece.I've been modding my Gti for 3 years now and i can safely say its a completely new car!!
Even the salesman at VW was really surprised by the way the car pulls compared to the other Gti's.
Most of the mods i've done i already mentioned, and i repeat the Hyperground kit was one worth making.Its not that hard, and it makes a REAL difference, since i just recently realized how really poor the electrical insulation is in the Polo and how that affects performance.Some of the thinks you will surely notice will be a much smoother acceleration, a real decrease in "bad engine days" (as in bad hair days

), and a HELL of a lot better radio reception!!.You see, the Gti was just an uprated Polo for the Germans and not a totaly different car.The didn't really bother with the details.Anyway the only insulation is from the battery to the gearbox...AND THATS ALL

.If many ppl are interested i can make a guide for the Polo engine and u can put it up.All it takes is the right materials, and a bit (or more??) of your time.

As for the CAI, it is a fairly common mod for the Gti's here in Greece, coupled with the CDA (haven't gonne to that yet

).Anyways it works fairly well with the standard airbox and K&N filter as well.The think u have to do is make a small hole to the front of the car to the oposite site where the Gti badge is located.Then u remove the resonator from the standard setup (even that is enough to increase your "butt feeling") and connect the airbox hole to the front of the car with some tie-ups and rings.AMAZING change in how hte car pulls.Maybe the best mod so far.

P.S. By the way, im really into modding this engine, but ther hasn't been anyone sharing my thirst.I keep looking around for info i can't find (like the Gti cam specs).I'd really like to find a forum specially for the Gti (maybe i'll even make one..) were i can exchange info with other Gti owners..What u gyus think???

Sounds good! It's hard to get tuning stuff here for the Lupo and Polo GTi, especially a chip, I know quite a few people who are waiting for a UK company to do one. Think it's because the car sare not exactly mass produced. A friend spoke to AAT and with a cam spec of approx. 250 for both inlet and exhaust with a performance exhaust/ maifold, P+P, cams and verniers about 155-160Bhp is achievable! ANy photos of your mods? I'm a bit limited for space in the Lupo to do a CAI mod!

Well there aren't many companies chipping the Gti here either, mainly due to the e-gas and cause there weren't that many sold.Some companies even use a piggy bag CPU.The cams u mentioned sound kinda wierd.Remember Schrick is THE BIGGEST and most respected cam manufacturer in the world tunning mainly BMW's, and he recommends different durations for intake and exhaust due to the VVT of the engine!!And trust me, if someone has done his homework, thats Schrick.Plus the use a so called "Swing Boost effect" which u will find on their site.That sounds like a plus.Pretty expensive though..

As for the horsepower u mentioned, i believe it achievable but think of all the stuff they do for it, and how much it will cost.I'm hoping for 150 after this mod,and then off for the CDA...
No photo's sorry but its not that hard to imagine.Make a hole to the front,remove the standard tubes,use a new tube of same or little bigger diameter, and connect the airbox hole to the new opening,NOt really a question of space.
P.S.I'm buying the new cams tomorrow!!!Yeeeeah

SKN do a chip for the 1.6 16v Polo, theres a 10% increase in torque and 15bhp increase in bhp.

I have just had one fitted yesterday on my FSi Polo and its fantastic so I can more than vouch for the quality
