EPC and orange engine light

Help me out please guys. I havent been on for a while and the wife still loves her Polo but the orange engine sign light keeps coming on with the EPC light in orange also. This normally happens straight on start up and is intermittent.
I have taken it to 2 garages who have pluged it in and say they cant find any fault. It seems to go away for a few days then come on again. Im afraid it will come on one day and will get ignored when something is really needing checking.
Any ideas

Exhaust Gas recirculation Valve. It cost me £130 to get mine replaced.

It has something to do with the emmisions, try doing a search on google

I'm really confused or more stupid than you, this car "put" on its EPC light, normally this relates to the DBW throttle (drive by wire) as EPC stands for Electric/Electronic Pedal Control. Normally I'd expect the EGR to upset the emissions side of things - so different light would be on (?). Really strange thing is that after this light has been on, the garage could not find a stored code in the engine management module - now that is a strange one! As these cars are OBDE compliant any garage with an OBDE scan tool would have been able to read and clear any stored codes - so what codes did they find and id they clear them? Personally, correct as the EGR valve replacement/clean advise might turn out to be, I'd want to know what the car was "thinking" was wrong before just buying and fitting bits as that route can end up being very costly. One point, which engine code is this relating and what is the mileage?

Engine Management light - you could have two problems, the engine light might turn out to be something like a Lambda probe heater failure - as that operates when the engine is cold so would show up soon after starting. One thing to remember, if the car "threw out" this fault while driving at hot, this logged fault would re-appear at the next start up even if it had "gone" - the engine needs about 6 or so engine starts after the fault(s) have "gone" before the panel light goes off - but the fault code is still stored in the individual module's memory until cleared by a scan tool or the battery is removed for a shortish period.

I'll throw this into the mix - last week my wife tried to start the car and found the car was immediately "revving" without her foot on the pedal - and the emissions light came on. She turned it off and on a few more times with the same effect, until it eventually came under control and she was able to drive it, but it wasn't responding well. The EPC light also came on, and at one point when she put her foot to the floor there was no power. She was able to carry on, and get home, and by the time she had to start it again both lights had gone out.

This is a 1.2 engine, code AZQ (the 65ps, 3 cylinder).

We called in the AA the next morning, and annoyingly his computer couldn't connect to the car (not that there were no codes, it simply wouldn't connect) and there were still no warning lights showing, but he diagnosed a throttle valve problem, and squirted something into the valve to clean it out, which appeared to settle things. We then took it to a friendly garage who read the stored codes - there were six faults listed, all of which agreed (in the mechanic's opinion) with a sticking throttle valve as they sometimes get "gunked up". He cleared the codes, took it for a test drive with nothing else coming up, and advised us not to worry unless it happened again, at which point they might need to take the valve off to clean it through properly.

Since then it's been fine - except - there's now quite a noisy high pitched "rrRRRrrr" every time the car starts which wasn't there before the AA man did his thing - and my wife isn't entirely convinced that the throttle is as responsive as it used to be before all this, but she's not sure if she's just being paranoid about something she never really noticed before.

Thoughts anyone?
