BBS RXII Wheel Restoration

Post by neilw »

A question to those who have restored a set of these really. I'm in the process of sorting out a set of wheel to replace my tired looking ones on the car. They've been in my garage for 3 years!

How did you get rid of the stained black tarnish on the out rims, I assume its some kind of corrosion in the alloy. Is it just a case of rubbing it down until its gone, or are there any chemicals out there that'll take it off.

I'll try and get a picture up later of what I mean, but I expect those who have restored these wheels will know what I'm on about

Thanks

I used some cutting compound and a scowering pad.
Bit of elbow grease, and then some wet and dry paper and your well away.

Thanks, I've got the guide. It doesn't really go into taking out the black/dark/stained aluminum. I'll have ago with scouring pad and cutting compound idea.

I have the same problem with mine Neil, its like the outer rims have become rusty/corroded under neath the laquer. The laquer is now peeling on my wheels and they are in need of restoration.

Let us know how you get one because it sounds like both have the same problem. I am getting a set of Ronal wheels for the summer months but whilst their on I would like to get mine restored ready for the winter.

Thats the worst wheel on my car. The other 3 are not as bad but you can see why they need reconditioning

That's just about what the ones I'm doing up looked like before I started. They'll look much better when you have the lacquer off and given the a rub down. But you'll see where the corrosion has taken place the allow will have dark patches.

yeah mine were like that before I did them, Even after all the sanding with wet and dry it was still almost impossible to completely eliminate the pitting, you end up with areas with little black dots, if you then apply something to protect them and polish them regularly the pitting is hardly noticeable.
