GEAR BOX NOISE

Post by dubclews »

hi. my polo 6n 1.0l has started making a real bad winding noise from the gear box when i get into 3rd gear and above. will this be a bearing or is the gear box on its way out?

If what tims says is true then it will be your main pinion bearing. I had the same problem mate. I had a whine, more of a slight grindind sound as well, in 3rd gear and above and when i took it to vw he said it is the main pinion bearing. When you coast in gear does it still make a whine sound?

Yeah that is what i thought at 1st but you dont know which bearing it is.It could be your gears. You have to take in to consider labour as it would be very difficult to do it on your own and i really wouldn't recomend it, unless you know what your doing. Also if the bearing/s have worn or chipped there could be bits of metal fgloating in the oil. If you took it to somewhere and they took it apart, cleaned it, looked at it, changed whatever needs changing (if they have it in stock or your car could be out of action for a while), put oil back in, it is alot of work and it takes about an hour to clean it properly in a machine. They could charge in the region of £60 an hour. If you say 2-3 hours that is £12-£180 let alone parts wise. You might get a parts warranty but then if something else goes wrong then you will be paying out loads.

I went to bradford, long way for me, but i got a fully recon box for £300, ended up costing £480 as i had a clutch fitted to plus vat and they charged me labour for clutch. I got a 2 year warranty with it to which is better than everywhere else i went to. VW wanted £1200 for a new gear box that had lifetime warranty, other places i tried only gave me 1 year and the cheapest i could find was in the region of £450.

My car had done 78k when it started making a noise in 3rd and above and it wasnt untill 80k it started in 2nd, but i got a new box at 80k. If your gonna keep the car for another year or 2 i would reccomend a new box. Try to get it sooner rather than later as if it is your main pinion bearing, when it goes it will make a very loud bang, and your gear box will more then likely crack the casing. Some places that do a 1 for 1 swap will charge you to take on your old gear box. I was told that can be anywhere from £50-£120.
