Maybe breaking blck 3dr gti.

Post by tmdigitalart.com »

Hi All

Had timing belt go on monday, garage are saying could be up to 1800 to fix depending on
what it has done, could need new engine.
Any ideas what i could get for it selling as parts,in and out is in very good condition, recent new
gearbox, bbs alloys in good condition. Ive had enuf now with these gti's,dont want to spend 1800 on it
when not worth much more for it to give me another big bill in 6-12 months, plus looking to buy a van
shortly anyway.

cheers
tom

Sorry to hear that mate! You could probably get around 700 for the whole thing. If you broke it probably around 900

They definately have you by the ears. £1700? That is a total p*** take, you could get a new engine for £600 max. Check out another garage

As Mouse_GTI said try a few other places as some a full of crap! Went to one and they said that i had gearbox problems as i had lowered my car and quoted me a ridiculus price, when in actual fact it was just the CV joint. Get it to another place and get quote and then make your mind up woud be a good nice polo gone to waste to be honest :(

will let you all no shortly, have seen engines for around 5-£600 mark but then more than likely same
again to fit it.Might just get cheap run about for now,how much are 1.8t conversions excluding labour.
Looked at engine from findanengine.co.uk, but so many bad reviews on net from people getting wrong
engines and loosing out on a lot of money.Would be a shame to break as such a good car other than engine.

where abouts you based bbspolo?
Give you quick idea of what happened, got in car last monday, cold hear ticking noise when started it but drove where i needed to go which was about 4miles away, later that night i drove back home could still hear noise so lifted bonnet and obviously it was allot louder and sounded like it was coming from timing belt area.Towed it down to garage on tuesday, once they had a quick look they found that just about all teeth were stripped off timing belt and said that crankshaft would not turn.Thats as far as they have looked at the minute, told them to hold it for while till decide what to do.Car has been needing allot of oil for the last year or so, i used to check at least once a week and after any journeys down motorway which really seemed to burn it,car never leaked on drive or when parked anywhere so must of been getting burned up when driving, never had any blue smoke from car.Car was spot on to drive right up until turned it off for the last time,if it wasnt making the ticking noise you would suspect a thing.

cheers for any advice

Im in surrey mate not far from gatwick airport!

Sounds like a odd one 2 be honnest! At first i was thinking u had just done a cambelt? the ticking noise would back this up as thats the sort of noise the tensinor makes when it is failing!
However the oil part has me sumped? and u say they couldnt turn the crank??
If the belt has gone why would they try 2 turn it? this would just cause more damage 2 the head!

the oil part could be one of many things such as piston/ piston ring damage (unusel on gti's) headgasget issues (again uncomen!) however both these u would notice a lack of power when driving!
The other idear could be valve stem oil seals?? wouldnt afect driving would just use oil!!

Now the bad part!!!
What i think mayhave happened is u obverisouly had a fault, ither headgasget, valve stem oil seals, piston/piston ring damage. Anyway this isnt important as what ever it is has suddenly got alot worse causing the engine 2run very low on oil, once this has happened the bigends have run dry seizing the engine (or just picking up a piston) locking the engine and stripping the belt!

now this is all just a guess from what u have said (lack of oil, crank not turning!) so DONT take it as a deff! However a few simple tests would show up what has happened (big faults like this are very easy 2 diagnose!)

Now your options!
Strip the car- To be honnest parts just arnt selling like they used 2 for what ever reason, your car (bar the engine) sound 2 nice 2 brake! And engines for gti's (worse case) are fairly cheep (400-500)

Sell the car as it is- If you cant aford 2 fix it and dont want the hassel of stripping it (which takes at least 5 months 2 sell most of the parts by my experance, some times longer!) Down side is gti's (running ones!) are at a all time low at the moment (ive been offered 3 quite clean, avarrage millage ones for less than 2.5k in the last 2 months!) so i would be suprised if u were 2 get more than £800-£900 pound! Having said that you may get lucky with some one looking for one for a 20v conversion or ither progect in which case u may see more as cheep (sub £1200) gti's without crash damage dont come up very often?

Pay some one 2 fix it- As long as u find some one who is reasnoble (and knows what there doing! lol) 2 supply a engine (worse case!) and fit it i would expect 2 pay no more than £1100 -1200 all in! This can be cut down buy doing some of the work yourself or finding some one 2 do it cash!! ;-)

Fix it yourself- As long you diagnose it properly, and arnt a complete novice at cars, it rearly isnt rocket sicence!!
And you can always cheat by paying people 2 do the small parts u cant do! and lets face it these days any infomation you would need is reaidly avalible on here or as they say (google is your friend! lol)

anyway what ever u decide let me know and ill help you as best i can!

Buy a dirt cheap runabout car.

Buy a GTi Engine.

Drive the runabout while you take your GTi to bits... I reckon even with my mediocre understanding of mechanics, I could do most of what is needed to get an engine out of a car. It might take ages and you might lose some skin off your knuckles, but as BBSPolo said... It isn't rocket science.

Get your mates round one weekend and supply the tools and beer and let them help.

Do as much as you can / feel comfortable doing... Then take it to a garage for whatever is left to do to get it running.

I know it's a bit different, but I watched Rob and his mates do a GT to G40 conversion in a weekend in someone's back garden. :D

Don't lose a load of money on your car by selling it for peanuts.
