It all depends on what your after?
Are you after more power? If yes how much more power?

I do not know your current engine size, but lets say you had a 1.0 you would have alot of choices on what to do. Such as, if you wanted abit more power then you would just get a bigger engine from a similar polo such as 1.4 8v, 1.6 8v or a 1.4 16v, which ever way you go gearbox issues will be more or less natural, more natural on the valver of course. These are easier as the wiring would be alot easier etc. But if you want alot more power you got other options such as:
1) Turbocharging the standard polo engine
2) 6n2 GTi engine
3) G40 engine
4) 1.8T engine
5) VR6 engine

The second to fifth options would need different engine mounts and alot of loom work as well as alot of other work such as uprating brakes etc...

Option 1 on the other hand has many ways of being done. You can get a AEX bottom engine half and an AEE engine head, combine them and you have a polo engine with a compression ratio of 8.2:1 but this engine can only withstand 7psi (half a bar), want to withstand more then you need forged pistons. Other way is, if you not up for building a engine from scratch then using a 1.4 8v engine and a 1.6 AEE head is another combination with a slightly less compression ratio.

As for the turbos you can get a ready made k03 kit for the polo, otherwise you can make the kit yourself which is what I'm planning but I am planning to use a mini metro turbo which I lost on ebay today :(

Then there is alot of modding you can do to the standard 6n engines, from g40 injectors, increasing fuel pressure, 3f or shricker cam etc. It's down to you what your after... I got most off this info of Jarno, great guy, the credit goes to him.

VR6 is the hardest out the lot simply because the engine just about fits in the engine bay, if you would have it done you would probably get a garage to do it as it would be one hell of a job to do on your own, and yes to the driveshafts.

The 1.0 is a pain as there is a limit on what you can do, and what you can do will have hardly any effect. Really its down to how much money and experience you also got mechanically. Like a VR6 would be a huge job financially whilst putting in a 1.4 16v or the 1.6 8v would be alot easier and could be done in your own time providing you got the tools and space.

VR6 would be a mamouth task, and would leave the car way front heavy. It wouldn't corner or brake without serious serious work.

Very unlikely, there will be some minor difference apart from that all the same, obvious things will be uprating brakes depending on current brakes etc.

Yep. If your dialled on everything for the conversion bar the loom, just carry it all out and get someone in to do the electrics!

you'll get used to the lack of power steering, i don't even notice it anymore unless im doing heavy maneouvering at crawling speeds. good workout until you get used to it though :D and if you know how to use it, the 1.0s can be pretty nippy! i can get 0-60 in under 10 seconds out of mine if it's empty and there's a straight flat road. No mods. did it once with my brother in the passenger seat, i think i surprised him, as he really wasn't expecting much from such a small engine!

Got clocked at 115 on the 1.0mpi, so its a nippy little thing!

Couldn't you just add the power steering motor on and change the rack etc if your that bothered about power steering? Being a mechanic you could pull that off.

Under 10 in a standard 1.0 is impressive. You sure you measured it accurately?
