Re: No power
I had an identical problem on Monday. Thought I would be kind and drive my mum to work in the snow! Was letting the engine tick over at idle, then suddenly...500rpm WTF? In a 3-cylinder engine, losing 1 leaves you with what basically resembles a lawnmower!
The annoying thing was, it was not caused by the snow whatsoever...wrong place wrong time I guess. Didn't stop me having to wait 2.5hrs in the freezing cold for a tow truck though.
I don't have access to any sort of vag-com so had to get this done by a garage.
...£170

Re: No power
£170 to fit a part that cost me £30.66 from the dealer and took me about 5 mins to fit.
But if you say anything to them they use the "we had to plug it in to the diagnostic machine" line
Going to buy myself a vag-com for when I get another light up

Re: No power
Or, if you don't intend to get too deeply involved with engine fixing, why not just go for one of these VAG + CAN jobbies from Gendan (www.gendan.co.uk) they are just £39.10 including postage. I've got VCDS for home use and big jobs, but got one of these Gendan things a couple of months ago - just to keep in the car. They cover ENGINE + AUTO TRANS + SRS + ABS - so that is enough to sort out most small problems. One thing, if you do buy one, I'd search elsewhere for a comprehensive listing of VAG codes as the first two times I used mine, the codes did not exist on the small booklet that came with this tool. A few minutes searching on the internet provided a proper list though - so don't find youself in the situation that I did - ie picked up the codes and cleared them but then had to go away and find out what they really meant.

Re: No power
Now get ahead of the game and find a NOS one in ebay for half that price - for the next time - stangely that's what I did before my first one went a couple of years ago, then a month or so later got a report of "engine running rough thing it is running on three cylinders" said wife, I grabbed VAG-COM + new coil - VAG-COM said cylinder 2 - air cleaner off coil 2 out - new coil in - clear logged fault - car now okay. I've since managed to get another from ebay - just in case!chewy wrote:Changed to coil pack on cylinder No.4 today and all is well

Deleted.
EDIT: How easy is the interface to use on the Gendan device? I take it you need to device itself and a code reference list?
