No More VAG Parts + Servicing Query

Post by Mouse_GTI »

My MOT/Service is due next month and my car needs parts. Went to find VAG Parts but apparently it's closed down? That's really sad, they were really good in the past and very helpful. Also need parts to fit myself...

Anyway are the following parts available anywhere else or is it worth just getting them at the dealer?

- Pollen Filter
- Brake Fluid (Type?)
- Gearbox Oil (Type?)
- Clutch Release Bearing (if this is specific for the GTI, would this fit my LUK clutch that was fitted last year?)
- Relay for wipers/headlamp washers
- Relay for custom intermittent wipe (heard you can get this, I lost the part number ages ago)

If anyone has rough prices/part numbers it would be a great help, thanks in advance :D

Also is it worth me getting braided hoses to sort out my crap brakes or am I just throwing money away? (I'm gonna get the garage to see if they can find out my brakes are so rubbish)

Apart from the wipers relay (I understand its a type "99" relay - mate fitted one to his caddy) and the washers relay, I get all the other stuff done at my local dealer as part of the ongoing full VWFSH :)

Yes, huge shame about VAG Parts but as the pound vs. euro exchange rate levelled out they were forced to cease trading. However, once the pound regains its strength they could well rise again!

Cheers

Cheers for that Si. I'm probably guessing there is a relay for general wipers/headlamp washers, and then the 99 relay (it always annoyed me not being able to set the interval, even my Mk5 Fiesta had that option!) is seperate. My wipers are still going crazy :(

I've checked GSF but they seem a bit sketch with regards to dates, don't want to order stuff and find it's wrong. Plus even if they are cheaper slightly than the dealer, the postage cost may just make it the same in the end :?

You should have a general motor factors near to you... or nearish... they will be able to supply you with every single part you need... the clutch components are used in various other cars as well.....

The only time I have to face VW prices are for specific things like trim, obscure sensors etc

The relay is from a mark 2 IIRC if that's any help.

Prices for the following are from GSF exc. VAT:

Pollen filter - £8.75
Brake fluid (Dot 4 is what you need) £9 for 2 litres (they sell them in 1L bottles)
Release bearing should fit you LUK. I can't remember the price of it though sorry!
Gearbox Oil - there's that Castrol SMX stuff that Tegwin recommended me. GSF don't stock Castrol anymore though. Check out what fully synthetic oils they do suitable for the 'box and research them on the net. It's best to get them from here, because the price will literally be half compared to places such as Halfords. Shouldn't cost more than £15-20 for 3L of this from them.

Cheers Tim.

A quick search reveals Castrol SMX is 75w85 which is the wrong kind for the box. 75w90 and fully synth is what is needed, VW code 50150. The equivalent Castrol oil is TAF-X which is 75w90 and fully synth. Opie Oils have it at £10.37 a litre. Gonna see if I can get it cheaper as that will be around £30 just to get enough for the 2.7 litres required! (http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-762-tl-501-50.aspx)

Would any old brake fluid do or do you get better performance for your money? Brakes are an area I don't mind spending money, especially when mine suck! There is Castrol Super Dot 4 - would this be worth a try? (http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-742-castrol ... fluid.aspx)

edit: I've searched online and Opie Oils is the cheapest by about £3 a bottle on some sites

357 955 531 is the intermittant relay. 99 is on the top of it. There are other part numbers though, they were in Volvos and all sorts of other cars too

Anyone confirm if 2 litres is enough to cover the brake fluid? (Just about to process the order for the brake fluid/gearbox oil)

That's what I've purchased for my bleed. A mechanic friend and GSF both recommended this would be sufficient amount, Not confirmed though.

Cool, I'll order two and if I find out it ain't enough will just order more.

Am beginning to think it could be the wiper stalk that's fault and not just a relay for my washers. Hmmm

My Dad went in to VW whilst I was working. They couldn't find the part number for the 99 relay (I didn't have it on me). They said it was 770 951 253A - is this a newer replacement?

With regards to the washer relay, part number is 701 955 200 and its £50.85! I'm not prepared to pay that when I'm not even 100% it's the relay causing the washer faults. Something has to give the relay a signal to activate, so does that mean it's the stalk? (Although this works fine when the wipers/washers aren't randomly going off)

On the plus side I got my brake fluid and gearbox ordered (£50 in total!), and the pollen filter was only £8 so cheaper than GSF

£50 for the 'box oil and brake fluid?!

it may well be the stalk playing up every now then thinking about it.

Yeah £50 for the lot (£30 for gearbox oil and £20 for brake fluid).

Now today the random switching on of the washers (both headlamp and windscreen) has stopped. If I flick the the stalk towards me to use them, it will spray but not switch off. The only way of stopping it is to push the stalk away from you, like you are about to activate the rear washer (although mine is disconnected along with the wiper). Still very confused. If I get time at the weekend I might check out the relay and the stalk connections
