IMO it'll always look weird, I wouldn't go bigger than 17" either, (You can go 18", but 17 is better for handling, weight, looks, rolling radius) which mean you'd still have an arch gap.
17s on standard:

I think that if you increase the overall wheel diameter you will raise your car and it will look more like an SUV.
For example if you put 205/55/16 instead of 205/45/16 the wheel diameter will increase with about 40mm... And, if I'm not wrong, half of that difference (20mm) will go to fill the gap, while the other half will raise the car with 20mm.

You wanna lower at least 50mm mate to pull off 17''s
Mine with eibach sportline springs supposedly lowering 50mm at the front and 35mm rear, i recon its more like 40/30 tho tbh
Then at the polo show 2007 (air ride)
What you think looks better?
The lower the better I say

Re: pics of polo with alloys but not dropped...
Yea don't get me wrong its a good bit of kit. Rays the man when it comes to Air and Hydros, managed to retain my standard archliners andachieve a massive drop etc. Its just Ive just had a couple of problems with the rear bags leaking due to stones getting in the baseplate of the strut and chaffing, which fair play to Ray he's only charged me £20 on labour the second time it happened and none on the first time. Just means ive had to join the RAC to get it taken on a flatbed upto him, plus sort out trains to get to peterborough which is a mish, and obv pay £130 each time for a new bag, and I know you can get kits cheaper from the likes of Venom these days. He said I must be unlucky as theres never been any leaking probs with Mk4 golfs and my kit uses the same parts pretty much bar the mounts. Appologies for the essay and for spamming your topic mate. Hope this helps whitegtipolo.

Well Ive never had coilies so can't compare to them. Its quite a stiff and sporty ride, which I quite like, it also gets stiffer if you go up or down haha the front struts are adjustable damping apparently Its a damn site better than the springs which where generally quite bouncey
