Horrendous MPG

Post by dantheram »

My GTi has decided that it is only going to do 250-280 to the tank, which give me an average mpg of around 26-27, this is far to low and i have no idea what is causing this.

Can anyone help?

Lowest i've ever seen is 32mpg, think you may have a problem. Can easily see 350 from my average tank, don't know what to suggest really, sorry!

If I hammer it everywhere I only manage about 250 miles on a tank...

If I drive normally... up ot 75 on the motorways.... I get about 350 before the light comes on...

If you have access to VAG-COm, get it plugged in and check for error codes...

Are you sure the tank is filling right up>?

250-280, is that before the light goes off? I see anything from 270-300 before the light comes on, which equates to around 31-35 MPG

Mine's no better than that really, typically I reach about 280 before the light comes on, that's doing 99% town driving but I guess i'm not the most economical driver.

What bothers me the most is the fact that the car seems to be quite slow unless i get it upto around 4k/5k revs, is this normal or is it just my mine?

The VVT kicks in at 4.5-5k, that'll explain the power surge. it's hard to say whether yours is underpowering though. As one mans slow is another mans fast.

I rarely get less than 300 miles to a tank, that's with my foot down a lot of the time.

Its the VW diagnostic system that gives you an idea of what (if any) electrical modules are damaged...

If you put your location in your profile a local person in the know might be able to help you!

Normal. To be honest you could say it's like a normal 1.6 up until that point. If you work it up to the redline in every gear it's brilliant, especially the noise with the BMC. Even without a BMC it sounds good. Although peak torque is around 3300rpm, it's still good going from 45 in 5th at around 2200rpm

I get about 290 - 300 out of a tank and thats heavy footing it everywhere.

It is much better on motorways runs though and can get up to 350 miles from a tank on constant motorway runs.

This week I've been taking it easy to work and back (70miles a day) And I've just got 330miles before the stupid light came on. I'm well chuffed. I normally get about 270 before the light comes on, that's errr not going slow.
