whirring noise when clutch is pressed down?
whirring noise when clutch is pressed down?
i keep hearing a whirring kinda noise when the clutch is pressed down and when driving normally like 30-40mph. Also when in stationary idle. =[
Any ideas what this is ?
I know the cambelt and tensioners has been changed around 60k and the gearbox was changed last year or so.
The car is sitting on 89k now,
thankss

Re: whirring noise when clutch is pressed down?
Sounds like the clutch release bearing
Re: whirring noise when clutch is pressed down?
thats what im thinking...i just hope these arent sypmtons of a cambelt or tensioner =(
Re: whirring noise when clutch is pressed down?
My suspisions:
The clutch release beaaring slides on a little tube that is bolted to the front of the gearbox... These tend to crack around the bolt mounting and snap off or bend... so the clutch release bearing does not slide straight or rubs on the input shaft...
A pain in the arris which can mean the cluch does not properly disengage for gear changing...giving crunching...
That is highly likley to be your issue... either that or a failed relaease bearing...

Re: whirring noise when clutch is pressed down?
so how do i fix this? with a new clutch or just a new release bearing?
doesnt sound like anything to do with the cambelts does it

Re: whirring noise when clutch is pressed down?
if the noise only happens (or gets worse) when you press the clutch.... I would suspect it is not the cambelt..
Its worth unclipping the plastic cover for the cambelt and make sure the belt looks ok and feels under tension...
But yes, if the noise is unbearable when you press the clutch and you think its causing damage.... then take the gearbox out and inspect the slider and release bearing.... and check the clutch... if its worn...might as well replace that when the box is out!
I dont know about everyone else... but the polo is a noisy bugger... makes all sorts of whining and grinding noises if you listen closley... I just put it down to VW being cretinous arseholes and just turn the radio up so you cant hear it!!!

Lol you joker, just turn up the radio
but theirs still going to be the guilty conscience!.
i took it to a VAG specialist, they asked me to let the noise get worse so they can pinpoint it, because it aint to bad at the moment but they say more or less it is the clutch release bearing

Re: whirring noise when clutch is pressed down?
the noise suddenly just got worse today!....it was fine for 20miles, then i parked up, then 20mins later, i went back in and the gears started to feel all sticky and difficult engage into gears...!..Got worse as i drove it when dipping the clutch , sounded like a cat was under the car !..
However took it to the garage , and they took it for spin and said the gearbox was going.!
NIRRO in barking, essex/london a VW specialist and they chargin about 560-600 for the recon of the whole box, and about 150-200 for labour!.
Fair price?? since they are a VW specialist?

I paid abround £800 for mine also, it's not uncommon to be charged that much.

Re: whirring noise when clutch is pressed down?
i have a similar problem although the noise does not go when the clutch is pressed down, (when stationary) it does not get any louder, and when the car is rolling can sometimes hear a metically noise but this goes when the car is coasting, i'm hoping its just the release bearing as the car has only done 32k! its just like a whirring noise that you have explained,
