How can I mount my front number plate without drilling holes

Post by dub envy »

I don't want to drill holes in my new front bumper as I will be taking my front plate off at shows.

So my problem is how to mount the plate in a removable way that won't damge the bumper.

I have though about putting a sucker in each corner and sticking it on like that. Another idea was to zip tie it to the slats in the lower vent, but that would look pretty gay with the plate recess above it...

I'm at a stand still. Any one got any btght ideas???

Thanks
Rob

Pritt-pads? Velcro? I'd use the Pritt-pad type things, surely it's easy enough to clean off the adhesive to leave the bumper looking nice?

Yeah, self-adhesive pads. It's that sort of thing that the number plates on me dad's newer Saab are stuck on with.

I wpould question the legallity of velcro cause the plate has to be 'securely' fixed to the car. Pritt tabs sound like the best idea

my rear number plate has been velcro'd on for well over a year now.... I can honestly say that no policemen have tried pulling my plate off to see if it's securely fixed on or not.

Velcro is surprisingly strong. However, when you do remove your number plate, do you want a piece of velcro on your bumper, or would you prefer it to be bare?
In the case you want it completely bare, i suggest you use pritt pads or double sided tape, since it can be easily removed, and a cheaply replaced, rather than keep buying new velcro.

yeah, I don't want anything left on the bumper when there isn't a plate on it...

Maybe a couple of double sided sticky pads.. then a little petrol to remove the adhesive from the bumper. I don't want to pull the paint off though. Bit worried about the painted plastic. I've never had coloured bumpers before and don't know how they will stand up to having sticky tape being put on and taken off....

Maybe I'm just being paranoid... the paint should hold up just as well on the plastic as it would on metal...

Go to halford and buy some number plate fixers, it's waht I use to stick nmber plates on for customers. They're fookin strong though So I wouldnt be surprised if it did pull the paint off.

Perhaps a really stupid Idea, but how about magnets? Neodimesium (or something sounding like that) magnets are super strong and tiny (about the size of a watch battery. You could stick a thin bit of metal on the back of the plate, then magnets inside the bumper.

Not sure on how practical it would be(and its a stupid idea :? ), but if it doesn't work they're great as little toys :P

have thought of that.. but I think the bumper plastic would be too thick. Would need proper industrial magnets...

Well thats what Neodyniums are mate :)

my rear one is put on with halfords plate fixers (essentially pritt pads for those who have found their plate screws have rusted and are closer to there than smiths)........ seems damn near immovable now they've set. wouldn't like to see what the state of the paint is if i was to pull it off! (the aim was to stick it on so it would never come free again!)
