whining gearbox.......

Post by dave-g »

heya guys :)

yet another problem........lol. recently noticed that when driving along in say 4th gear at about 2.5/3k revs, when i accelerate slightly i hear a very faint whining-whistling noise? yet also related i think is a rattling noise when the car is stationary until i put the clutch in? now i've been to vw, who reckon that its either the release bearing or the input shaft bearing not correct? do you reckon the whining could also be the release bearing screaming at higher revs etc?

its going into vw tomorrow, just wondered if anybody else has a clue like?

cheers fellas

Beginning of the end. 10 months and around 8000 miles after making that sound it started going dodgy in 1st, then last Monday all gears went and started making very loud howling noises. Just managed to drive it from my work to the garage on Friday. It's in today getting a replacement box and I get to enjoy a Mk5 1.4 MPI with 5 doors for 2 days!

thats the thing though, its only done about 1k since it i took it to have the box stripped and all bearings etc replaced? its off now anyway and its going back to the bloke who supposedly 'fixed' it last time! i got the box from bbspolo i think on here, apparently a good box in the beginning!! lol.

anyway, turns out its not the release bearing, thats good as new, its something to do with one of the other bearings inside not bein seated as i said before. getting seriously fed up with this car at the min, nowt but trouble for the last 6months

hopefully tho, by the end of the week it SHOULD be fixed lol. (should being the key word there)

just want it sorted before it gets the chance to blow up lol

I have just accepted the fact that the polo gearbox is noisy....a little whiny ..... and got used to it...... its only a problem if it gets much worse...

There is very little sound deadening in the polo so you are bound to hear all of the noises....

You should hear the diff in my TVR.... it sounds like I have a massive supercharger.... the noise is annoying, but normal!

Yea, I wouldn't worry too much about the noises either. The gearbox is just a bit on the loud side I guess... I was in my brother's S2000 and the gearbox is whistley and whiney on that and its defeinitely not on its way out.
