Update. Bummer. It seems also my fan sensor/ temp sensor has stopped working overnight. Coolant warning light come on the way home, noticed temp gauge at max :O. Stopped car. No fluid in the resevoir, opened it up steam everywhere. And also water dripping down seemingly from the water pump. Anyway I took a risk. waited half an hour to let the engine cool, luckily I had about a litre and a half of water as recently the tap water in the area was dodgy. So filled back up and set off with heating turned on high. Got 2 miles and died. Went back to try start as it was way too hot to wait for it to cool down. Now it barely starts and when it does, it doesnt tick over right and the engine is shaking about. So im guessing Ive done permenant damage or if im lucky just wrecked a couple of the plugs hence the rattling engine not idling and dieing when i try drive off.

I think what happened is the temp sensor has gone, fan not come on. All the coolant has steemed up and somehow found/created a leak cos of the pressure. Maybe at this time the water pump went somehow as i was losing so much water??. Anyway im really gutted. I bought the car for £200quid and wanted to keep the little shed going as long as i could but seems the risk i took has very much likely kill it as i wont be paying more than 200quid for repairs. Fingers crossed. Gona take it the garage tomz morning

mate i had similar problems last week! What happened to me was the thermostat died and got ruined. Parts from the thermostat worked their way round to the water pump, which obviously broke that. Therefore my car was overheating major time.

Dont ever take the coolant cap off when the engine is warm. It's pressurised and should remain a sealed system until completly cooled. I also managed to get a air lock for good measure so had to bleed the whole coolent system for hours until it was sucking the G12 coolant mixture properly and all the air was out.
