No Reverse..

Post by Sutch »

Okay, this is confusing as it gets for me..

Recon gearbox fitted about 12k ago, driving fine as always, dropped the girlfriend off and turned around fine (the car was all warm at this point), drove home (about 1.5 miles) and would not go into reverse..

However careful I was, or putting it into another gear first it would just grind trying to engage reverse..
All the forward gears were stiff.

Next day got in when the car was cold, all gears working fine, 5 mins later (I'm assuming once it was warm) I had the same problem as mentioned before, although all the forward gears seemed even harder than before..

Got it to my garage after letting it get cold again so I could make it the short distance, gearbox off, clutch looks fine (only 12k old) and off the gearbox went back to the people that did the Recon, they looked at it Sat and said nothing wrong with it, but will look again monday.

Now, Garage obviously closed today, but.. IF Gearbox is fine, and clutch is fine.. What can it be?

Linkages?

Not sure if makes any difference, but when engine is off, all gears engage fine.

Cheers, Ed!

Linkages and shift rods are the most likely cause. Possible even coins getting into the shift mechanism - youd be amazed!

Reverse will always crunch - the best way to try prevent is clutch down and pause for a few seconds before selecting reverse gear :)

Sort of hope it Is just linkages then.

Ye, I always stick it in first before reverse and goes straight in. So as soon as it felt this bad I knew something was wrong with it.
