hi

took mine off a few months ago to put a new gaiter on. pull the gaiter upwards and you should see a crimped metal collar round the gear knob. basically i used a small flat bladed screw driver and brute force. if you mank the collar up to much when taking it off just use a thick cable tie when replacing. once you have removed the metal collar just a hard pull and the knob comes off.

cheers

as above but i found the metal clip to be very hard to get off so i used a metal clipper type thing which worked a treat

the metal clip is there for a reason and should be replaced with it as the gear knob will start to revolve on the gear stick if not properely secured. You wouldn't put a hose on with a cable tie would you. for the sake of a £1 it's better to do it right

Yes, the OP should have used two small screwdrivers to ease the crimped ends open a bit - then recrimp it using blunt wire cutters or something like that. I'd be surprised if you can buy a new clip from VAG so maybe you have measured it and are sourcing it elsewhere - if so where for other peoples benefit?
