Its not just GTI'S

Post by marc »

Just collected my car from the volkswagen garage after a service, as I was collecting my keys I over heard another one of the service staff talking on the telephone to another volkswagen owner saying that " Im very sorry madam its a fault we've never seen before but you wont be able to collect the car today as the new pedal box is arriving tomorrow and so it wont be ready till the end of the week now." After he finished the call I couldn't help but cherp up and say you wouldn't mind if i hazard a guess at what car that lady owns you were talking about. The guy looking quite smug thinking you havent got a chance mate says go on then. So I simply replied a polo, the gentlemans smile dropped and said yeh thats right its probaly on a W or X plate aswell. this time he laughed saying yep your right again its on a W reg. However the car wasnt a GTI but a 1.4 instead. It's possible that the dodgy pedal box is a problem across all the polos in that model and is not just GTI's. The joke of it is that considering that the gararge claim they had never heard of a faulty pedal box how did I know this and the guy knew he had just told a big porky. This kind of blatant lie doesnt give you confidence dealing with these people.

Never trust anyone eh. Shame really...

Perhaps it's most common on GTI's, but a problem on all Mk5's? I've never heard of a Mk4 with this issue yet, and the majority of cases seem to be the GTI. Dissapointing!

what is the actual fault?

(don't go into major detail, just wondered what the basics are)

I've replaced the Pedal Box Bracket on my 6N Alex. It's a '96 car.

The fault is not being able to get any gears???
Starts off with reverse then gets worse???

The problem is caused by the clutch plate going stiff. Change the clutch when it should be changed = no problem. Dont change the clutch = bent, snapped, twisted, cracked PBB. This damaged bracket then causes the clutch cable to bend after entering the car through the bulkhead. This makes the clutch stiffer and then the bracket more twisted and thus harder and harder to get gears. (I drove my Mothers GTi 20 miles back to the dealership without using the clutch when her PBB eeded changing 8) )

This isn't the 1st problem like this on VW's. Remember MK1 Golfs used to split the bulkhead. Lots of MK1's still around now have had a repair panel welded into place ;)
If the 6N/S brackets weren't cheap Spanish Tin then maybe we'd all have bent, cracked bulkheads too.

Which is worse

I saw the old Pedal Box when I had mine replaced and it was literally a small crack in the weld about 1.5 cm long where the clutch pedal is attached. It just simply flex's instead of allowing the clutch to move as it should, therefore you cant get it in gear!
