Dan how about trying this for free:-

if you open your bonnet, you'll find that there is a duct cold air duct that attaches to the grill, that is like a right angle bend, just remove that and see if it goes any better as its a big restriction on the standard setup. I'm rtemaking this part and opening up the slots in the grill too.

if it doesnt make any differencence then the restriction is somewhere else, and that will be the airflow meter which can flow less air than the throttle body can take, so you need to replace it with a golf one, which can flow aproximately the same as the NZ throttle body. So I will be using one of them with a high flow air filter. Please note that the air filter you have is the same as used by some 200bhp audis so it should be able to flow enough air.

Or, Like Dom says. You could do something like this:

With grille Removed. I dont drive around with no grille like "some" people

yeah thats right thats exactly the kind of thing I'd do., and just make sure the slats in the grill have been opened up too.

dont worry about getting warm air when you put your foot down as the warm air flap also works by vacuum, so that when you flor it and there isnt much vacuum in the inlet manifold the cold air flap will shut allowing the cold air back in.

I'd even fit a grill too, but that means I'd have to do the following  :-
1) straighten both inner wings
2) replace the bonnet
3) replace both outer front wings
4) replace the slam panel
5) replace the front crossmeber
6) replace the front valence

yeah my mk2 is very bent at the front :D

and then I'd have to find where I left the front grill, and no I dont mean the one that got broken by the nova, but the new one I've got somewhere

sorry if I seem kinda negative guys, but these are my own thoughts and while the induction kit certainly looks better and sounds better, the impovement in performance can be psyclogical, and I am giving good valid reasons why I dont think things will be of too much benefit.

Yeah, Dom that's exactly what I was thinking, I heard you talking (or writing about it) and it seemed like a much better idea. Plus I wouldn't have to take it off for the MOT. I'll probably take it off 2moro and see what a difference (if any) it makes with my poor 55bhp.

Just let me know if you need me to look for the air filters and which bit they actualy are, cos I don't have a clue (as if u haven't noticed that already  )

Post by dowdie-mk3 »

Hi guys though ti'd let you know i've just finished doing my induction kit today. It cost me 10 quid the system of a golf. And thirty quid for a k&n air filter which is universal. Sounds a lot better than the crap bolt on k&n's an i can notice the difference. get some pics done tomoro. My next task tomoro is sorting te boot fully flushed. I must be mad !!!!

firstly , this item has now been made a sticky!

sounds about right! mine cost me no more than £10 for the bits at the breakers and no more that 30-40 for the green filter! however the price has now been decided as of yet!

the problem was it had to be modified to get it on due to not being able to get the studs out! if ya can get the studs out, there is no problem, u can use the bolts off the golf n u'll be fine!
however, if ya leave the studs on at least u r able to put it back to origional system!

i'm thinking of doing the complete induction which includes everything that u need to convert it which will be:

filter (yet to be chosen, i found the green one to be cheapest!)
modified golf mk3 inlet and pipe
all breathing pipes cut to length and "L" bend peices
bolts to hold onto the existing studs

will be taking mine off today so i'll take pics and post em on here for everyone to see!

Ah! I finally managed to log in.....

Ahem. :)

OK, wondering - is it just an altered sound, or is there likelihood of an actual power increase? Especially if the de-cat exhaust can ever come to fruition - maybe a 5hp boost overall? :D (wow a whole 5hp, but thats a good 1/9th and good for a couple more mph especially uphill...). And would it be easy to swap the old system back on for winter? Mine really suffers with the cold some days... in fact i'm not sure if my hot air feed pipe OR the switch are any good anymore anyway :)

Alternatively, the pipe-to-the-grille system, what kind of hose do you use for that? Rob it off an old vaccum cleaner or something more special? (indeed.... is it possible to get a replacement hot air duct out of similar material, as my old paper-and-tinfoil jobbie is coming to bits, it's mostly heatproof tape now and hardly fits)

and will it affect insurance / mpg? :D

finally got some pics!

firstly, this kit does give a great sound improvement! u can drive around pritty normally but when u open her up a bit, she don't half sounds sweet! as for performance wise, don't forget tis a 1ltr! atm mo i am running my car with the standard filter on and it doesn't feel as racy as the induction kit, whether thats due to the noise or the fact that i am pushing the car harder, but she does feel nicer to drive with the induction kit on! o and also, she does seem to pull up hill a bit better.

atm, the kit i have made is still in testing (oo it sounds so official) due to problems with the vaccum pipe which controls the hot air feed ( i am trying to resolve this problem atm)

the grand thing about this kit is u can change it back to the origional set up in a matter of 20mins as proven by me the other day.

enough of me talking, here are some pics i took of the kit and all the bits to go with it!

Image

Image

Image
u can see the blue "L" bend pipe, thats where the breather pipe is directed from

Image
everything you see here is all u need for the kit to be fitted, if everything works according to plan, u would get everything in this picture so u wouldn't have to worry bout n e thing!

remember this kit is a first so still needs adjusting, for instance, the breather pipe can be made shorter and the only reason i have a blue "L" bend is due to halfords not having another one of the black ones!

the bolts will look better than those as those were sorta rushed!

n e comments?

:D well never mind the breather thing, my entire breather system is missing (perished away yonks ago, too much hassle and cash to fix for little benefit)...

To maybe counter what some others said about the 1 litre not benefitting from this..... its a bit funny how there's not so much increase in power from half to full throttle as there is from one quarter to half... kind of suggests to me you're opening the floodgates wider than there is water to flow though them as it were :)

(this noticed when i cruised it home over a hilly road with the accelerator not open all that far, and didnt lose anywhere near as much speed as i expected compared to a full-on blast)

Well, tried the local breakers at the weekend, looking for inlet parts. Zero joy from that trip  I'll take a look again this weekend.

If I do find more than one, i'll just grab the lot. Seems that most of the plastic parts get ripped off the engines and thrown away... people just want to get into teh guts of things.

If we go for a group by... then add another to the list. My other half doesn't want to be left out (1.0 Match)

just letting you know, I am still very much interested with this one, just give me a shout when you feel it's ready! Can have a look at my scrappy, good old Pease Pottage-they usually have quite a few mk3 golfs.
