Newbie Questions on Lowering.

Hi all.

Hope this the right place to post this.

I've recently acquired a MK5 Gti and I've decided that I want it lowering, perhaps 50mm-60mm.

I want to do it on a budget but being very un-mechanical minded, I've going to have to pay a garage to do it.

So, my questions are:

1. How many hours labour do you think I'll be looking at to get the job done?
2. What do I need to buy? Can I just get shorter springs and dampers or should I just get coilovers?

Any other comments are welcome...remember, I'm on a budget!

Firstly - I have no idea about how long it'll take a garage to fit your suspension, sorry. Do you not have any mates, family members that are clued up on cars??However, if you're on a budget, I'd go for the Jackson Tuning coilovers that you can buy on clupolo. -

Coilovers are a better buy than lowering spirngs IMO. These go down 100mm+ and for £215 delivered, you can't really complain!

Hi im also new here and looking to lower my 2000 gti.
I was gonna get some good coilovers..need to save a bit!..and someone said that lowering them too far puts loads of stress on the driveshaft and diff??? im no mechanic so wanted to check here to see if its true or im just a noob being fed BS lol

hello, cost me £180 to have my coilovers fitted. and yes lowering does put pressure on the diff bearing just had my gearbox re-conned because of this

How does lowering the car put pressure on the diff and bearings?.... Thats utter rubbish! Unless lowering the car means you start driving like a complete tool, its going to make no difference to gearbox wear!

It will effect wear on suspension bushes etc....

^^^exactly true, no strain is put on the gear box! the only way strain is put on the gearbox is when you floor the car in every gear, wheel spinning as its not an LSD and cornering hard! oh and not keeping an eye on your box fluid level! there is a fair amount of strain on your driveshafts though as there facing upwards rather then downwards! but doesnt really affect the box!
