GTI vs VRS

Post by Mouse_GTI »

Before I start this isn't a thread condoning racing or anything..

Anyway, was coming out of a flyover onto a dual carriageway last night. There was a Fabia VRS up ahead of me. So we get out onto the slip road and he wasn't going too fast so I decided to move into the outside lane. He floored it and so did I and I just couldn't keep up with him. He kept edging away. Was pretty shocked. I know they have midrange but got past 3rd gear where I thought my top end might come in handy but no suck luck. Are they really that quick?  I know the ratios in my new gearbox aren't as good so the car is slightly slower through the gears but it looked pretty standard to me

Isnt the Vabia VRS a 1.9 TDI engine?..... in which case... of course its going to kick your arse... its got a sheeit load more torque than you do!

The vrs has like alot of torque's its crazy wen u compare it to like civic type r's and like all the hot hatches around! It will eave our cars for dead on the rolling above 50 mph i reckon, dont look all that but boi they go like s**t off an ironing bored! :D

vRS' are 130bhp standard.. Could've been remapped?! A remap takes those engines to approx. 180bhp. Baring that in mind they do pull through gears like a train. I've had a few Fabias try give it a go with me, but never wanted to take them, 'cos I know I would get beat, maybe not off the mark, but definately already rolling!

My Mate has got a vRS and we are identical in a straight line. In fact the GTI would beat the Fabia in a straight line 0-60 drag due to the first gear being shocking on diesels.

The Vrs will destroy the Polo on a hilly road because it has 230 ft lbs of torque as standard, this is also the case with all the PD130 tdi engines. The 9N GT polo will blitz a GTI on the hills no matter how hard you push it.

The GTI starts pulling away from a standard VRS at around 80-85MPH so Mouse could of come up against a modified vRS but I highly doubt it was re-mapped because it would of left you for dead. Could be the gear ratio's like you say because you should be keeping up with one easily on a duel carriageway / Motorway. As I say me and my mate are always testing our cars against each other and they are literally identical in most circumstances, its only up hills where they have the advantage and on a straight road the GTI just about edges it.

The VRS is a very good car and shocks most things on the road, My mate is getting his re-mapped later this month at P-Torque and it will then push out 175BHP and 300ft lbs of torque. Anymore than that and the clutch fries!

Ye guys my mates got a vrs and it flys.. befor he got it re-mapped it was quick raced my mates g40 and was just getting beat by that... i would of thought standard vrs would be faster than a polo git

He has got it re-mapped now with just over 170bhp and it is scary how qucik it picks up speed

Agree with this. That is what surprised me, past 85 I though I would start edging forward but not at all. Wish I did buy a 9N GT years back ;) Total sleeper

The VRS handle's better than the GTI as well in the corners but they are very close in terms of speed.
On a track I think the GTI would have the advantage because its got an extra 17BHP per tonne but the VRS does have over double the torque so on a road race the VRS would probably edge it.

VRS 130BHP & 230 ft lbs of Torque 1315 KG - 98.85 BHP per tonne / 174 ft lbs of torque per tonne
GTI 125BHP & 112 ft lbs of Torque 1084KG - 115.31 BHP per tonne / 103 ft lbs of torque per tonne

Paper stats dont mean anything when it comes down to it but from my experience there is nothing to choose between them 8) .

Its true though a re-mapped VRS will destroy a GTI but that's what you would expect with a 1.9 TDI engine in comparison to a 1.6 non turbo petrol engine, the 9N3 GTI vs VRS is the more obvious test.

If the vRS was as easy on the eye as a GTi, I'd own one 8)

I still keep an eye out for a tasty black vRS, they're quite nice. I think, if memory serves, that the official headline-grabbing quote at launch was that from 50-70 it is quicker than a Porsche Boxster

Some nice modified examples out there. I don't do enough mileage to really warrant a diesel car though, plus, they just don't sound as good or rev very high.
