Re: Polo96CL's Progress Thread - Tints & Votex spoiler!

Post by Polo96CL »

Not much more news really, but i've put all the glass in so the tints are done :D also put the door handle the correct colour!

Been at uni now so I have more time on the weekends just messing around with bits on the car, i've been doing the following this weekend. The interior door grab handles on the mk4 are notorious for scratching, especially as they are an unusual textured plastic. So i've rubbed them right down so they are smooth, few coats of grey plastic primer, 3 shots of black gloss paint and a couple of coats of lacquer should make them nice. Too bad i've got a 5 door, 2 more to do. The one on the right is done and the one on the bottom has yet to have its final coat of thick lacquer which should smooth off any bumps like the other had.

No other mods to mention, might look into retrimming the door cards in red suade sometime soon :D

Thanks Tim, i'm surprised how simple the process was really. Just had the pull off the old material, use the old one as a template, cut the vinyl/leather/suade to size and spray glue, tucking the edges under the little tab. Just need to super glue the edge on the ensure its all trim and tight, but here is a pic of a 90% complete one :)

I'm going for the 6n GTi interior with the door cards on this one, plus it matches the Colour Concept Recaro's.

Cheers Rhys, yeah its a really smart job. Red is so much brighter in real quality, I will have to take some in when its all done. I was going to go for red suade like the mk5 GTi, but decided against it when Tim mentioned that it gets really grubby and wears quickly. The vinyl was only £8 for a massive roll, and it'll easily do all my doorcards and i'm considering wrapping some bits in the stuff to see what they turn out like. I'm not sure what the MK5 would be like to do, pretty similar I guess though, and the quality is really good.

Problem is with the 6N2 is there's no where to tuck the edge, as it's exposed. so you'd either have to have the bare edge on show or work out some other way of concealing it. I'm sure there is a way around it, I've just never given it the time to work it out.

Looks great mate, can't wait to see the rest.

Yeah i'd like to take it further and maybe retrim some other parts, probably the dash panels in the center console but using real leather instead. In regard to the 6n2 door cards, you'd have to double tuck the ends over on itself like a fold and then press down adhesive in the "sandwich" and the material to doorcard. Bit of a complicated process to get right especially if it has to be stretched like the 6n, but hairdryer in use I can't see it being that hard really.

I want to have a go at the black suade pillars soon, its all about money really.

More realistic colour here, btw its not a crease on the close up, just a shadow :)

Couple of small updates :)

Well i've fitted the new door card in, still not got round to doing the other 3 yet but I wanted to make sure it looked alright before I committed to the lot - which I will now :D Sadly I had a run in with the silly high curbs at the local sainsburys and badly scuffed my lower left of the 16v bumpers, it will need spraying eventually anyway but its another pain which I didn't really need at this point in time! For those of you who know me, you will know that my girlfriend has just bought a Lupo (Yellow, slammed on RH cups, you get my drift ;) ) so i'll be spending a lot of time on that getting it perfect, so less time on the Polo more than likely :( Gotta love the modern 6n2 Style dash though, it drives like a new version of my car

Also got some Road Legal Pressed Plates on there way, got to be made up by dubmeister but should be here soon :D

Please excuse the picture quality, my phones red is very poor

Still got to glue that top line strip down, but hope to finish that today :)

Also got myself a down and out sticker for the rear :D

Sneaky picture of the whole car :)

Future updates soon:

Fully retrim all 3 remaining doorcards
Reallign that rear wiper - yes I know its a dodgy angle atm :P
