ECU Question

Post by neilGTI »

I think that my ECU might have gotten water inside te connections causing me the speedo to not function, i have changed the speed sensor but vagcom came up with a code pointing to the ECU.

I have done some research and found that water may have gotten into the plug.

My question is:

If i unplug the ECU, am i likely to get any problems when i plug it back in (eg, cant start car, immobiliser, etc)

Has anyone taken out their ECU and put it back in without any problems ?

I dont want to create more problems.

Wont effect anything..

I took my ECU out a few weeks ago so I could do some welding on the exhaust.. (removed as a precuationary measure to prevent damage!)

Unplug the battery and leave it for half an hour.... then go right ahead and unplug the ECU... DO NOT connect the battery back up until the ECU is plugged in properly though!

You should be able to see any corrosion fairly easily. A stiff toothbrush might be enough.... I would be cautious of using anything metalic... Its not a good idea to connect any of the pins on the ECU with anything metalic! It might not like it!

There is some waterproofing spray designed for connectors... try using that perhaps?

The code that i got was 18058, however i traced the falt to be the Speed Sender pinion undernath the speed sensor.

I am not sure why i got the 18058 code, but think it may have been because the ECU was getting confused about the speedo not working correctly.

I must admit, I had a little help from one of my mates who works at audi :)

He plugged his computer in, which is totally different to VAGCOM and the only fault it was picking up on was the speed sender, but seeing as i had already replaced the actual sender itself, he started to dig a bit deeper until we found the pinion which had no teeth left on it.

The replacement part was only £3 and swapped over in less than 10 minutes.
