weird engine noise

Post by vw55raz »

having this problem for a few months now. only happens when car is being driven for a long time around 40 mins onwards. If im driving and slowing down just about to stop and then put gear in neutral and take foot off the clutch, a weird noise happens from around the passenger side of the engine. and then if i press and depress the clutch again it goes away. really irritates me it does. i did have the clutch changed exactly a year ago so dont fink its the clutch. anyone know what it can be??

Seconded, if it's a whirring sound that goes away when the clutch is depressed it's likely to be 'box related. It'll be happening in a few of the gears too my guess, you just won't be able to hear that well as it's in the early stages.

it will happen on neutral and like when im stuck in veeeery slow traffic and i got the car in first gear just moving with no gas and u can hear it . i cant really explain the noise. its not grinding or whining. its just a weird CCCCCC loll .. not the very best way of describing it lol.. how much will gear box bearing cost to get sorted then?

I have the same issue with my MK4 Polo. When I cold start the car there is no noise, only when I drive the car for a while the noise starts. It only makes the noise when I am in neutral and the clutch is released. I was told that it is the Release Bearing. I am having it checked out next week Friday when my car goes for a service.

A gearbox recon can cost anything between £300-800, depending on where you take it.

£1100 from VW, after you've exchanged your old one!

Your best off getting it refurbed mate (that saying it is indeed the gearbox!), don't settle for buying a refurbed one and putting it in either, as all 6N2 boxes are the same just different ratios, so it's common for people to get it wrong and you end up with a box with funky ratios.

But obviously first step is diagnosing the problem fully!

hmm, I get a weird sort of squeal when I set off in 1st, but only when the engine is cold - doesn't happen when warm or in any other gear.. reckon it's similar problem?
