I've had my 6n2 Polo GTi for over half a year now. Spent a fair amount bringing it to working order (alternator + gearbox) and it's behaved nicely during the cold weather - so now looking to refurb the wheels as a reward.
They're the standard 15" BBS split rim ones and all seem to be suffering from corrosion/flaking. I've approached some companies for a quote but they said they don't do split rims or they'll need to see it first because they're really difficult.
Anyone had their's refurbed? How much did it cost? Any recommendations (bearing in mind I'm in Cambridgeshire)?

Hey up dude,
Ul be hard pushed to find a company who will split ur alloys and do it like that because ur not supposed to split them, i work at a spray shop and we dont touch split rims just incase they come undone!
If i was you i would just get the lip sprayed a very light silver and ur face off ur alloys a darker silver so it gives the look ya know????
WICKED WHEELS are pretty good and are a mobile spraying service so u should be ok with them,
If u go for the polished lip it will just keep creeping back dude, hope this helps abit!

Thanks for the info. Their website says they do split rims @ £125.00 per wheel + VAT. A little more than what I want to spend tbh.
If I spray, I'm assuming there would be some other work done to the surface beforehand right, coz there's a fair amount of "flaking". Does the "look" last long if it is sprayed? I really don't know, I just want a good looking finish that will last a year or two.
What have other GTI owners done as I'm sure this is a common problem?

Re: BBS split rims - Professional refurb cost?
I had mine done, well the outers by a local firm called Body & Wheels in Kent.Charged me £45 off the books for the refurb. They warmed up the wheels before splitting and removed the bolts fine.Full outer wheel polish and re lacquered them baking the lacquer on for a harder coating, new valves and re balanced.Really pleased with them although i think sometime i will get the centres done.
Makes a HUGE difference to the car really worth doing.Hope you find somewhere dude.

Re: BBS split rims - Professional refurb cost?
I got quoted £120 per wheel for split rim refurb. Really wanting mine done, but really don't want to spend that sort of money.
I'm thinking about refurbing the rims myself, but need to get some spares steels as I can't have the car off the road.
I got Refurb guide off here for the gti wheels which is pretty good. (I can dig out the pdf guide if u want it)
The guide shows you to split the rim, sand off all the laquer lip down to metal (requires one hell of a lot of sanding using various grades) & then polish the rim until it comes up mint & shiny.

It doesnt matter if you bake the clear coat or not as there is no clear coat on the market or for uk use that clear coat sticks to bare metal, especially really shinny not abrased metal ya know??
I clear coated mine but wish i didnt as its creeped in some how after i seem seeled it from behind, i would spray em as it wont last!
Even factory tooled bbs wheels start corroding after 5 months like my new wheel did!
If you want the shinny lip then dont clear coat it just keep polishing it with metal polish mate, thats all ya need to know really but any body shop will do this for you, itsa simple refurb and im sure they will split it for you!
