Blocking the EGR

Post by david burton »

Has anyone blocked their EGR on the TDI? It's common on the 2.5TDI transporters and makes things better apparently. My dad did it to his and has had good results - better pickup and smoother.

I'm having some 5th gear juddering at the moment under full load and I also read the EGR can cause this. Could this be the clutch on it's way out?

i blocked mine off back in the summer using the allard power pipe and blanking plates. not sure it has made a massive difference. i did notice the inlet mainfold was covered with sooty oily crap so i would guess once i take it off and clean it it will stay clean.

I've got mine off on the fabia. i've noticed a dro of about 2mpg overall with it in bypass with the allard pipe and blaking plate on the begining of the EGR system.

Best way is to take the EGR valve and anti shudder vale off (takes 20 mins and a few allen bolts) ive it a good clean and put it back. wis i did.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation

It's basically to keep emissions down by recirculating exhaust gases. Warm air goes into the engine at low loads, but at high loads it shuts it off. Often blocking it off can help matters and reduce soot at times.

mine doesn't smoke now. i'm planning on putting my egr and anti shudder valves back in but stripping the centres out so it looks standard but it's straight through.
