Hi, ive just fitted a pedal box to mine, it went after only three days, i thought these things were reliable!
the parts cost me about £50, that covered the pedal box itself, a new accelerator pedal as it didnt fit the new box, and all the bushes, oh and there is a clip at the back of the brake pedal which WILL snap when you take it off, this was only about £3.
it took around 7 hours! its worth doing yourself as the labour would be horrendous at a garage, give us a shout if your gonna attempt it yourself, i can give you a detailed description of how to do it if you want
right here goes! no doubt others will suggest different ways, but this is what i found easiest!
take all the drivers side trims and covers off, instrument panel out. Drivers seat out. The steering column is on a mounting which it is bolted to using tamper proof bolts, i did try getting a punch on these but it wasnt having it, if you take the wipers and scuttle panel off you can see where this braket bolts to the bulkhead, i found it much easier to undo these bolts from under the bonnet and leave the bracket attached to the column (plus it saves you from having to replace the bolts)
steering wheel has to come off and all the plugs to the electrics. The brake pedal is attached to the servo by a rod which fits into a plastic clip on the back of the pedal, i have heard that theres a special tool to take this off, but im guessing you wont have access to it, i just snapped it off, which took forever as i was lying on my back in the footwell! (as i mentioned before it was only a few quid anyway)
i then undone the bolts holding the pedal box to the bulkhead, you can then manouevre the column out and get to the pedal box.
a few things to be careful of putting it back together, the column clips onto the pedal box so put them both in together before you bolt them in. if you attach the brake pedal and need to get it off again you will cause yourself a lot of grief! also undo the clutch cable at the gearbox end, and attach it to the pedal box first. and for some reason my old accelerator pedal wouldnt fit the new pedal box so i had to get a new one, and cut the trim under the dash to accomodate it, mine is a m reg so yours might not have this problem.
hope this helps, its a bit of a nightmare but mainly due to the discomfort and awkwardness of it!
sounds fiddly but going to take my time with it so dont care if it takes a week tbh lol
im going to take the old one out and then see where im at with it,did you get a replacement from vw or the scrappers?
guess the only good thing to come of this is that i can replace my drivers seat plastic slides, and also fix the annoying noise from steering wheel horn contact while attacking this lol will be fitting a new clutch cable, and also clutch as it judders from time to time so not ideal
i got mine from vw, have heard of people welding them, but mine had already been welded and still broke. the part you get from vw is modified and stronger any way. have also heard of people drilling them and putting bolts through, but the part was only 30 quid. if you mess around with it too much you risk it being out of alignment and then putting strain on the cable
It's always best to get the clutch cable done too as you've said you would. I found out the hard way, replaced the box only for it to go again two days later. So I forked out for another and a cable!!! Be aware you can also twist the cable when it links with the clutch, this can ease or harden the tug. Therefore having an effect on engaging the clutch putting presure on it.
and things arnt as bad as i thought as i looked at it today for the first time before i get started and it is only the long bolt holding the pedals thats damaged, pedal box itself is fine....
spoke to vw and they are £5.80 +vat RESULT
seems as though the clutch pedal has dried of its lubrication and started to rotate the bolt, causing it to get a cut off the pedal box,it then bent, then finally the snap
