Gearbox - Please Help!

I've got a 2003 '03 plate Polo E (55). On Friday I lost 5th gear completely on the motorway (not fun). The VW garage have quoted me £1000+ to rebuild the gearbox, or £2000+ for a new one.

My gearbox code on the sticker near the spare wheel says "GKS". I've found a breaker who has a gearbox from an identical looking 03 polo, but the one he has is stamped "GSEX2". Would this one be compatible with mine?

I love my little polo, and I want to fix her (she's called Sophie), but I don't see the point in spending that amount of money on her when she's only currenlty worth about £3000 in top condition.

You will need to put this in the mk6 Polo section to get a better response. Someone there can help you.
