new owner advice please!!

hi guys , this is my first post on here and am just looking for some advice and help please,

i currently just sold my last car which was a vauxhall astra vxr and decided to get something a little smaller and opefully cheaper to run so looking at buying a 2004 vw polo 1.9 sport tdi 100

its in silver with 64k and has the gt tdi colour trim with colour coded handles and bumpstrips etc plus montreal wheels.

just a few questions if poss please?

are these good cars for general use and mpg etc??

anything i should look out for when purcahsing used??

what sort of simply mods and aftermarket changes can i make??
e.g armrests, bulbs, small but effective mods??

like to keep things simple yet smart.

do vw or any aftermarket source do a good double din front navi unit or cd player??

and also what remaps are good for that little extar power?

my gt (130) good on the mpg
most maps are good just depends where you live really to what type you have
just listen out for the knocks that you would on any car really
that bout all i can tell you mate

hi - welcome. you have the same as mine. remap was the best £250 in terms of performance - jason at morebhp. done coilovers, bushes, arbs and brakes mine and now great fun to drive. looking at a fmic at some stage. good luck and there are plenty of how to guide on here. and haynes manuals are really useful if you are doing the work yourself.

Ensure the cambelt's been done (Every 60k / 4 years, so it should have been done once...water pump could do with replacing). If possible, check the front ARB and coil springs, they're know weaknesses. And ensure the battery light comes on with the ignition on (but not started). If it doesn't, it's a tell-tale sign of the alternatior sense-wire problem that affects some TDis. Simple fix, mind you.

Check the 6 disc CD changer as they hardly ever work right. And dash creaks because they will drive you MAD after a while.

Other than that I would definitely look for any accident damage / rust spots and walk away from knocking noises of any kind before you definitely know where they are coming from.
