Horn not working!?
Horn not working!?
Hi, im starting to regret getting this car!
First of all, every thing i do, that is simple to every one else, my car makes it difficult for me!
Installed right click remote central locking, worked great for a month, now works when it wants to..
GTI splitter, people have said its a simple click on job, i cant even get the old one off!
Leaking, my car has got a leak on the front drivers door, making the foot well soaked with a puddle, (no idea where the leak is!)
Tires, went to look at my horn today and found that my the inner sides of my tires have worn almost to slicks!
and now, this!, my horn stopped working (stebel naultilus), looked at the connections and they had corroded.
Ive cleaned them up and replaced the ones that were very bad, and yet my horn still doesnt work..
All it (or the relay) does is click every time the horn button is pushed?
Not very happy, at the moment.
Any help would be great.

Re: Horn not working!?
sorry to hear that mate
-regarding the rclick remote central locking there were quite some in here that had an issue with it if I am right, something to do with some wrong wiring
-for the splitter I don't know if its the same but when I had to remove the one on my mk2 golf it was a really pain in the ass especially in the corners and had to blow some good amount of hits with a rubber hammer, so if it is the same it is a bumper off job
-as for the tires if your polo is lowered (also possible if not lowered) and the tires are worn on the inside you need a chamber alignment/balancing
-if the connectors for the horn were corroded it might also be that the horn from inside is corroded/jammed so not working. it is also an easy job changing the relay switch so might also give it a try
regarding the water mate check the seals asap, I would not like having a rusty floor pan or with holes in it

Re: Horn not working!?
Thanks for the reply.
Ive checked the seals, nothing out of the ordinary. I flushed water directly down the outer seal with the door shut, there was not leak?
All i can think off now is that it is heavy condensation?
Along the inside seal, on the inner side (side thats not showing) there are water droplets..
About the horn.. How are you meant to mount the horn with out it becoming corroded? Design flaw! Its ment for out side, its bout to get water splashes here and there...
On top of that, theres no where else to mount it!? The existing wires are to short.
About my tires..hasn't been lowered but it had a full service and mot when i purchased it so surely the alignments should of been sorted then!? I don't see how the alignment could have pushed that far out?
And my right click locking. You said wrong wiring? I did it true to Tim's guide. i was thinking of connecting with bullet connectors because the splicers are crap, but using bullets would then mean cutting the wiring.
Is there a way to check if its my horn that is broken? Take it off and directly link it to the battery?
If i have to get a new £30 horn then how the hell am i gonna stop it from doing the same thing? Other then coating the connections in vaseline?
Thanks.

Re: Horn not working!?
how can condensation be that bad that it created a puddle of water! pouring a water from the outside will not replicate the effect of rain. rain can pour for hours and water will have all the time it needs to seep through even the tiniest cracks. on my golf the driver's door seal had a little crack on the upper side and with al few rain it used to start dropping and quite fast! If you have a sunroof make sure that the seal is good, open the roof and check for any dampness after it have just rained.
as for the horn, in the inside most probably it has got a thin metal diaphragm. with the salty roads in England it can easily corrode or if not jam because of the salt crystals. I am quite sure you can test it directly with the battery. I used to spray WD-40 in my old mk2 golf horn and let it drip out, and after it sounded better. also make sure the switch on the steering is ok. and also the connection behind the steering, just after removing it. it may be possible to mount the horn up in the engine bay where water does not reach if it shows to be a problem and make sure that the opening is facing done if it is a snail type horn.
uneven wear on the tire could be nothing else apart from bad alignment or bad tire pressure as far as I know. get it laser tested, it shouldn't cost much.
for connecting the rclick i would have prefared bullets than splices, they are more secure. have you checked with an auto electrician to check for any wiring flaws?
hope you will be able to fix most of the problems mate because polos aren't bad cars after all
you are experiencing some bad luck

Re: Horn not working!?
i feel your pain my remote was shocking but now seems to be ok... i just cut the rubber off the wires twisted the metal wiring with some that i put in to extend it then shoved it down the locking and unlocking bit in the pump lol propper bodge job but it works
your leaking a is having the same problem and alex is offering some good advice maybe refer to that thread ?
horn i have no idea sorry
splitter takes so propper manhandling to get off, when i crashed i rescued it (aswell as my dubmeister licence plate) from the middle of the road lol i remember struggling to discoinnect it from the bumper getting so annoyed with it i litterally ripped it off and it came off with all clips still intact,
i think you do get some camber "allowance" meaning it could be some degrees out even 1 0r 2 will make the difference, i once had my camber set 7degrees off set that along with slight rubbing ate my tyres within 4 days and i had to get new ones

Thanks for the info, if you could show me what thread you are referring to that would be great.
Ive got my fingers crossed for the horn to work, but if it doesn't, how else could i protect a new one? I was thinking of tying a bag around it to stop the splashes?
I guess ill have a go at removing the bumper tomorrow.
Is it just the case of remove arch screws and a few screws above the grill and the 2 behind the fog grills?

Re: Horn not working!?
arch screws... think theres 4 or 5, 1 behind each indicator and 4 under the bonnet above the grille
for the horn... dont over look simplicity, a sandwich bag and two elactic bands will work wonders lol ive got some over my fog light wires lol.
and my bad it was your thread.. my bad erm ill have a look at my car when i get it back and see possiple causes for a leak there, also have a word wityh the mechanic i know he has worked on a lot of 6n2's and may have come across this problem before
mate, keep faith in the car... there were times with mine that i was happy to give my keys away and never see the thing again, but i stuck with it and now i honestly dont think i will ever get rid of it.

Re: Horn not working!?
yup pull the black tab thing up, and to put the indicators back in make sure you have the metal clip facing this way... (they can have a habbit of falling off)

then just slide them back in place using the locaters on the wing then push the black tab back down
p.s. excuse the hand lol

Re: Horn not working!?
Hi mate, this is my first post on uk-polos.net....
Just reading about your horn problems because mine has stopped aswell, then read about your leak! May be able to help, i stripped the interior out of my polo to find my leak, it was running between the window on the driver door and the rear view mirror.
Bad design fault on these cars is that theres a membrane which is stuck between the door card and door, if this seal is compromised then the water will drip in... especially if your parked on a slight slope.
Its poor because over time this seal is bound to lose its stick and all 4 doors on my car went within a few months... my car was like a swimming pool!!!
To solve the problem i simply pealed this membrane back starting from the top and when i got 3/4 of the way down put a small bead of scilicon along the bottom edge, waited a few hours and then stuck it all back up... worked a treat. Hope this helps.
P.s did you solve your horn problem? would be interested if you did to know how...
cheers.

Re: Horn not working!?
Hi Steve welcome to the forum!
Thanks for the information about the leak. I may look at it again when it decides to leak again. I have yet to see another puddle since that post. So you said it was running across the top at the front, above the headlining between the rear view mirror and drivers window?
Maybe in the summer i shall take a look.
Regarding my horn, i simply took it back to Halfords, and they give me a new one off the shelf! I also contacted the manufacturers about it, and they were concerned for where it was mounted. The reason mine stopped working was because it got wet.
My horn is now mounted up high by the battery and the relay is covered with a thin plastic bag, to stop it from getting wet.
Hope this helps.
Did you take any pictures of the leakage issue you had?
Lewis

Re: Horn not working!?
make sure the plastic bag covering the relay is not trapping in condensation because if so then you are back to square one5509433 wrote: My horn is now mounted up high by the battery and the relay is covered with a thin plastic bag, to stop it from getting wet.
Re: Horn not working!?
Ah. I never thought of that!
Its been quite a while since, and all is fine. I may check it when i get a chance. Thanks for the heads up.
