Clutch graunch

Post by morrismen »

:P Hi everyone. My first topic for this Forum - just purchased a Polo GTi (W Reg) 2000 Model.

It's a great car - hold the road like it's on rails with the EDL! And so many gadgets as well. I am enjoying the experience!

One niggle I've got is that when I test drove the ar at the garage, the clutch was fine. When they finished servicing it for me to pick up, the clutch was biting 1 inch off the floor! It wasn't like this when I test drove it. :!:

So, the VW mechanic tightened up the adjusting nuts on the clutch near the gearbox cable end and said to try again... Now I have no dampening in the clutch pedal when I depress the clutch as the end spring is compressed with the lock nuts being tightened. :( Maybe the cable has a problem and it's stretched, which may explain the graunchy feel to it at the biting point? But how could it change so dramatically in a VW service?

It doesn't appear to be a hydraulic clutch - just a cable to tighten - is this correct?

Has anyone known of a Polo GTI clutch suddenly dropping the pedal to 1 inch from the floor?

Does the clutch suddenly 'stick' on a 2000 W Reg Polo GTI or could it be that the cable has been replaced and it too long?

The engineer says all cables are the same for ALL Polos in 2000 - it this correct or is the 2000 W Reg Polo GTI clutch cable slightly shorter?

I wonder whether they may have put in the wrong cable if they replaced it - either way, I didn't ask for it to be replaced in the service, so somethings definitely dodgy with the clutch since the service. :?

Any help on my first post much appreciated. :D
