How much could I sell it for?

Post by Lytescary »

I have already posted this on Club Polo, but wanted to see what you guys also thought.
I am looking at changing my car and was wondering how much I could realistically ask for it.

It is a 6n2 Polo GTi in Silver with 93,000 and is unfortunately registered as a Cat C on HPI.
The driver's door and wing are in a Satin Silver whilst the rest of the car is Reflex Silver as I didnt realise that their were two different shades of silver on the GTI's went I went to replace them. Also, the sill is a little buckled/bent near the front wheel arch. The front bumper also has a some paint peel due to the Motorway drive I often do. The car is in no way horrible to look at and straightening out the sill and spraying the door, wing and bumper is it would look really good. Most people don't even register the colour differences to be honest unless they are pointed out.

I have spent quite a lot on the car in the year I have used it. After buying the car with the dented driver's side I had to spend £702.71 getting it back onto the road. I then used it for a couple of months and the inevitable happens and the gearbox decided to go. I had the gearbox and clutch replaced last year in July at a cost of £622.36.
Whilst on holiday in January my dad booked it in for a service and had the following done: All filters, Spark plugs, Oil Change, Front Pads & Disks, Checked all fluid, Four tyres as previous owner had put really cheap tyres on. This all came to a massive £652.29
HT Leads were changed just after the service as one failed at another £50. I have also had to rear back box of the exhaust replaced although I currently cannot find the receipt.
I have other service history from the previous owner with a hell of a lot more spent on it. I also have the service book with VW service history up to 54,000. The Cambelt was changed in December 2007 at 71,000 so is good for a while yet.

I know this is alot of information, but I just wanted to show that despite it being Cat C, is has been looked after. I will be putting 12 Months MOT on it next month as it is due to run out.

If you haven't died from reading this yet, how much could I probably ask for it? I know I am likely to lose money on it, but if I can't get that much I am happy to keep it. Thanks

Here are some pictures...needs a clean

Hmm Cat C cars are always hard to price. I think youd get £2.5k tops, maybe less purely due to its crash/repair nature.

You have obviously spent alot of money on the car but unfortunately you wont get back any of that money when you come to sell it on.

With it being Cat C I think you would struggle to get £2,000, perhaps £2,200 if your lucky

Despite the GTI's being rare they are always available on Autotrader, eBay, Piston Heads etc and the prices are really competitive. GTI's tend to fetch between £2,800 - £3,100 at the moment with the lower milage / Higher Spec models fetching slighly more.

I recommend keeping it because you have spent alot of money on the car and you would struggle to find a better equiped car for £2-3K.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

About 2k tops i'd say. The downside is that there are unrecorded crashed cars on the market for close to 1.5k, spend about £500 bringing it back up to standard and you've got a clean recorded GTi for half the price. Your best bet would be to break or to keep i'd say, as the market for anything more than CAT D is pretty bare.

I'm still in two minds about what to do atm. I went and bought an Alfa 147 yesterday as it was extremely cheap as the people had a baby on the way. I might decide to sell the Alfa (for a tidy profit) and the Polo and buy something even better. :D I know that I am going to lose money on the Polo, but I am the type of person who gets bored of cars easily and I am that stage now.

If I was to break the car, how much would I be looking at making? This probably won't happen because of the hassle and I know what my parents would say as it is currently parked on their drive.
