Some great discussion going on in here :) Great to hear everyones stories and reasons for loving the GTI.

I've always been partial to the 6n2... think they're a very nice looking car and like a few others have stated even at 10 years old it doesn't look dated at all. I currently own a 1.9D, very slow and sluggish but it returns decent MPG. The acceleration of the GTI is what really interests me :) It's all about progress!

I'd love to... I'm not a very mechanically minded person though so I wouldn't know where to start and with just over 136,000 on the clocks would it be wise? :)

Anything is possible. Diesel engines are strong built so it should be capable id say!

hmmm... the other thing that makes me wonder if it's possible is that it's not an SDI. It's actually the same 1.9D engine that was in the MK4's so I think it's slightly different to the SDI engines (i'm not too sure how though). I'll keep the idea in mind though, I would love to keep the car I currently have and rake the miles up to well over 200,000 and have a near mint GTI sitting on the driveway beside it :)

Well for me it was having a ride in my mates 1.4 MPI Last year ( which his mum has had for 10 years, with me going with them to pick it up in the first place...). I thought it was a great little car, and started looking for one and then came across the Gti and fell in love straight away! the fact that they have more extras than some new cars today is phenominal to be honest!

So Today I saw the 2nd only Polo GTI I've ever seen in the flesh... I only got a glimpse of how it all looked but my goodness it looked lovely. Very nice bright red and the BBS alloys look much better in real life than I ever thought they would... granted, they were moving a bit, but slowly in traffic.
