Boost Gauge - Wiring

Guys I need a bit of help. I have no issue installing the boost pipe from the engine bay as I am following the guide in DIY section

My issue is on the wiring part because am no expert in wiring and dont want to f**k up the GTI lightswitch loom so need some guidance.

In the write up it shows how to wire up a SWG Gauge but I dont like the look of them so went for the 'Auto Gauge' smoked version.

Now basically I would like the gauge to switch on once the ignition is switched on with the key and am not sure which wire is the ignition live?!?!

The wire connector, which I got with gauge has four wires in the loom which basically connects from the gauge to the lightswitch loom:

RED: Battery (+12V)
BLACK: Engine Ground
WHITE: Ignition Switch 12V+
Orange: Dimmer/ +12V To Dimmer

Now, here are the pictures of the GTI lightswitch loom which I took:





If it would be possible could somebody please please advice me on how to wire up this?!?!

Also if it could be possible please add lines to indicate which wire is what or which should be connected to what.

Now im sorry i dont know the answer but im also interested. Could you post up a picture of your gauge? i was going to order up the SWG but i always wanted a smoked one but wanted a good one as ive heard the cheaper ones can leak and loose boost. just wondering what one youve got

Well mines 'Autogauge' one, there new smoked series. My mates had it in his Corsa DTI for a year and still going strong

Hi mate,
Good to see my DIY guide is still coming to some use!

So i've understood this correctly....

. My guide was to have the gauge illuminated only when car "sidelights or headlights are switched on".
. You are wanting to do something slightly different eg: having gauge illuminated upon "switching ignition on".

Have you got a multi-meter? I used one to work out which wire done what.
eg have meter:
. Meter's Black lead on car's bare metal to earth.
. Meter's Red lead in the back of the connector block with the swich still attached.... after about 10mins of turning swich in several positions and ignition on/off you can work out what wire does what (eg: IGN Switched live).

^^ Not sure if you've worked any of that out based on you're post.

The Gauge..... The new-south one only had 2 wires!

Does the instructions offer any clue as to whether
- are all these connections are needed for your setup?
- What function do the connections serve? (Seems alot of wires just for a basic on/off illumination - does the gauge have any other electronic features?)

also,
- Is it a mechanical gauge? (eg: does a vacuum hose plug directly into the back of the gauge and it functions without any wires connected)

Thanks GTi_dan for the reply. I am having exams so I had no chance on looking onto this. As stated in my first post the gauge has three wires which serve following purpose:


RED: Battery (+12V)
BLACK: Engine Ground
WHITE: Ignition Switch 12V+
Orange: Dimmer/ +12V To Dimmer

also,
- Is it a mechanical gauge? (eg: does a vacuum hose plug directly into the back of the gauge and it functions without any wires connected)

Btw the gauge is Electrical where the pipe from the FPR pipe goes into the Enging Computer Unit and then a connector from this unit goes into the boost gauge.

The reason I want the boost gauge to be on when the iginition is switched on is because of the smoked screen. You cant really see the dials etc until the gauge is illuminated, if you know
what i mean?

Yeah once i get free my task would be to use a multimeter as I will need to borrow one from work.
Well once the ignition is switched on I could probably find the ignition live sure!!!! i.e. by using the multimeter

From my knowledge i think an ignition live and ground should do the job, correct me if I am wrong!

The instruction is useless like any other guide u get with a electronic device! It only tells which wire is what basically!
