Broken horn

Post by steve99sjw »

My horn no longer works on my 6n2 Polo GTi. Nothing wrong with the fuse but there is no live feed to the horn terminals when the horn is pressed so I believe it to be a faulty contactor behind the steering wheel. Does anyone know how to get to this contactor? Do you have to be careful not to set the airbag off?

Any advice/help would be much appreciated, thanks.

I have exactly the same problem and I can hear a relay or something clicking behind the fuse panel.

have you managed to get to the contacts behind the steering wheel? If so, is it easy to get the front off the steering wheel without setting the airbag off?

There is a guide somewhere... basically says... disconnect the battery and leave the car for a good hour or two...

Then, with 2 long metal bars of screwdrivers poke them through the 2 small holes on the back of the wheel and push the front of the wheel off... Once inside... have a poke about... DO NOT plug in the battery until the steering wheel is back together properly!

Actually battery only needs to be off 10 minutes :P

You have to release the tension clip that holds the airbag on through the two holes - it is rather fiddly so dont give up!

Once the airbag is off, the horn press is the brass strip that runs under where the airbag is - ensure its all connected properly, and that the connector on the underside of the steering wheel is in good shape.

Having pushed a rod into these 2 holes, I can feel a spring at the end of each. However, not being able to see them, I'm not sure how to release them! Is it just a case of pushing a bit harder (as I think tegwin suggests) or is there some nack/technique required (other than just pushing) in order to release the tension clip? Will the front of the steering wheel be lose once these clips are released or will I still need to prise it off somehow?
