Re: The GTI! - Alex's Progress Thread - New Tyres Ordered :)

Had the new tyres fitted today - boy are they grippy! The old toyos were bald on the inside edges, so I got them to check the tracking and its 5mm out on the front!

They proceeded to attempt to undo the tie rod bolts to adjust the tracking, and they are completely seized tight. Took the car to the local welders who helped me sort the bolt issue last time when trying to remove the wishbone. They heated it up, and managed to get one of the nuts undone, but the tie rod itself is seized in the end.

Basically, if you heat up the tie rod end, due to the balljoint being nylon, itll just melt and therefore ruin the end. So I've had to order two new ends, lock nuts and self locking nuts for the ends for tomorrow, and am gonna have to get them replaced. On the upside it should reduce any play there is in the steering, but its a pain in the ass having to get things fixed all the time!

I had the EXACT same problem on my last Gti, cost me 125 to put right, they said the track rod end was unbelievably siezed and took them forever to get it off. Unfrotunately it's one of those jobs a garage or someone with a ramp has to do, as you can get enough force to the thing if its jacked up.. Interestingly both track rod ends on my new Gti were fine when i had it tracked, Women drivers obviously look after their cars

Progress update...

Tie rods and nuts replaced. Tracking is now 100% correct. Two issues...one...the new nuts for the balljoint to hub are on backorder and two...the steering wheel isnt straight but that's an easy fix

So all in all result, but not 100% yet

Nuts are now replaced so all is good, and I have straightened up the steering wheel. Steering is definately tighter since the tie rod ends have been replaced so they mustve been a little worn!

Next on the agenda is a refurb of the RX2s :D

Well, a little update...

Going to be soundproofing the front doors in the next coming week, and sorting out a few rattles. Also need to look at repairing the headlining and sorting out the paint on the fin, so ill deal with that.

Mechanically, everything appears to be a ok atm, which is rare! (ive probably tempted fate now!)

The brake calipers will be coming off with the carriers in the next few weeks for nitromorsing and a fresh lick of red brake paint. Its been needed since I got the car, but its getting to the point where it really needs to be done now!

Also, the RX2 centers are gonna be resprayed soon...just need to find a decent paintshop for it!

Well, what a great day at inters! Took some great photos, those of which will be up in the next few days. Came home 2ish as it was just too hot to hang around! So after I got in, I spent a bit of time cleaning the car and getting a good coat of wax on. Ill let the pictures speak for themselves.

Lets just say, is it too shiny? lol
