N00b Arrival: Please help me identify my Polo

Post by Noodoo »

Good Morning Ladies and Gents.

I'm Noodoo. I've had a P plate '96 1.0L Polo Hatchback for about 6 years and with our first born on the way, the missus and I decided it was time to upgrade to a bigger bus, so we picked up a Y plate '01 1.9TDI Polo Estate.

The car itself is puzzling me. I'm not sure what mark it is. It seems to be the older shape front end but has the newer (round dials) interior.
Could anyone help to identify it?

Here is a picture:

Thanks for any light that you can shed on the subject.

I'll be posting about my niggles with the car once I'm sure I'm in the right sub-forum.

Looks like a Polo Variant, this is basically a 6n-6n2 crossover model. Its an estate car, which was one of the first to feature the "6n2 dash" and canbus system. They came with a 1.6 litre 75 and 100 horsepower model, and 1.9 litre T diesel engine developing 64bhp. Underneath its a Mk5, but on top its a 6n. They hadn't got round to updating the bodywork on this model yet, which is why it looks like a 6n, but runs and uses a lot of the tech from a Mk5.

Hope thats helped :)

Thanks for the info. :)

Canbus.... great... now i'm really screwed if it goes wrong... I'm used to the old classic Minis...
Does it have a spark? Yes
Does it have air? Yes
Does it have fuel? Yes
It's running...

Still, it's a learning curve. :)

Is 6n, Mk4 and 6n2, Mk5?
Would I be best to post questions in the later model forum?

Don't worry, all the newer cars can be plugged into VAG COM to diagnose any issues. Although they are simple cars and anyone with basic knowledge should be fine :)

Its a Type 6KV

Type 6KV. Cool, Thanks.

I've heard of this VAG COM a number of times.
Is this something that I can run off a laptop to go through the diagnostics or is it a case of Main Dealer only kit?

VAG COM is software which you can run on your pc/laptop, its the diagnostics system for most VW's. It'll tell you what any warning codes, issues and problems with the car are down to, and there are lots of little features (such as turning on cruise control etc). I don't think its very expensive, you'll have to buy a cable to hook it up to the car though, and the software can be found on the internet if you know where to look

I found a some cables but they range from £215 to £10 for 'the eBay VAG COM cable'...

Any advice on which cable I'd need for this model?
If there is one which would cover a MK4 Golf and a W plate A6, that would be a bonus as I could split the cost with my mate and bro! :)

The cheaper Ebay cables are ok. You just need to make sure you pick up an OB2 cable.

I had a scout on bitTorrent and found Version of a well known pieCe of Downloadable Software. However, I'm still not sure whether I need a CANbus or K-Line cable and whether or not that particular brand of software is the one that I need.

Canbus is just the system that the mk5 polo uses, as far as i'm aware there isn't a controller to be able to change it. Not heard of K-line so can't help there hehe.
